Man Utd have Premier League title issue if they complete Harry Kane transfer

Ex-Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas thinks Manchester United will still struggle to challenge for the Premier League title even if they sign Harry Kane this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be given a transfer warchest to complete his squad overhaul.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is wanted by the Red Devils as they look to return to their former heights.

But Nicholas feels Liverpool and Manchester City would still be way ahead of the chasing pack – unless United delve even further into the market.

“I still think they’ve got a little bit more to do,” Nicholas told Sky Sports News.

“Looking at the catch up to Manchester City and Liverpool, there is quite a considerable gap to get close.

“We’ve seen Frank Lampard and Chelsea kind of threaten it early in the campaign, but these two for me are quite a bit ahead of the rest.

“I heard Gary Neville on The Football Show this morning talk about the spine of the team with Harry Maguire at the back, then the midfield with Bruno Fernandes doing well and Kane up front, but I think there are many other positions that need fixing at Manchester United before they would threaten to get there.

“They would get closer, Harry Kane would guarantee them goals, but I do think that Manchester United are a team that score goals anyway.

“He would add to it, no doubt about that, but I still think they would need a couple of players in there to be seriously challenging for the title.”

However, United legend Gary Neville thinks Kane could fire Solskjaer’s side into the mix.

He added: “Maybe I think what I would say is it fits Manchester United’s historical transfers, going back to say Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, trying to sign Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand so the best and most famous English/British player in the Premier League.

“It does fit with that obviously what Macheter United did last summer with Harry Maguire, who was one of the best players available on the market.

“So in terms of Harry Kane, I did work with him with England and I do think he’s a clever lad, who wouldn’t get caught out if he didn’t want to say something.

“So I think the little opening of the door, that Instagram piece with Jamie, had something in it.

“And I don’t think Harry Kane would have been impressed with what happened to his club a couple of weeks ago.

“I think he’s a good lad Harry Kane, a solid lad, he wouldn’t have taken that very well.

“But I think he’d have been warning them, ‘I’ll be watching you’, because that’s not something we do.”
