Man Utd have messed it up – odd reasons stopped Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek deals

The most galling aspect of Manchester United‘s current problems is how they could have been avoided.

Inadequacy at the top has grown in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson swaggered off into the sunset, to the point where the Red Devils’ playing staff are now as bad as those who sign them.

Initially, when Ferguson left, Manchester United experienced a slump. But what was initially a stumble has turned into a seemingly never-ending fall. With every month, a new problem arises.

Things are so bad that not even the happy Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can turn things around.

The United manager is faring worse than even David Moyes did during his only campaign at the club. Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho now look successes when compared to the current situation.

The Red Devils’ lack of investment has hurt them. And what will infuriate fans is just how easily they could have signed top targets.

Take Matthijs de Ligt, for example.

Had United signed the defender when they had the chance – which they did in the summer of 2018 – then maybe things wouldn’t be as bad as they are now.

De Ligt, who has struggled for Juventus, is undoubtedly talented. He’s got a bright future in Turin, which was why they invested so big in him.

But United, bafflingly, turned down the chance to sign him. To make things even worse, it was because of his father.

However, not because of his demands. Instead, the Red Devils felt that because De Ligt’s father was a bit stocky, he could go the same way.

What sort of club thinks that? As mentioned above, De Ligt has struggled for Juventus.

But in shape or not he’s better than pretty much every centre-back at Old Trafford. Anybody who would take Phil Jones or Marcos Rojo over the Holland international is kidding themselves.

To make matters worse, United could have signed Donny Van de Beek too.

The Ajax star was offered to the Red Devils this summer, knowing that Solskjaer needed bodies to replace Marouane Fellaini or Ander Herrera.

But, bafflingly, United didn’t move.

They thought he wasn’t worth the £35million investment. Given he scored nine goals and registered 10 assists in the Eredivisie last season, that’s downright bizarre.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that De Ligt and Van de Beek would have improved this Red Devils side.

Just about anybody would. But United’s failure to sign either of the two players show Woodward and co are out of their depth.

And until United have a football expert in charge of footballing affairs, that may remain the case.
