Man Utd finance chief drops major summer transfer hint which fans will love

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could benefit from a large transfer kitty this summer after Manchester United’s finance chief Cliff Baty hinted there was more money to spend than in previous years.

Baty was coy over exactly how much Solskjaer will get to splash out on some much-needed attacking firepower.

But the senior ranking club official will definitely have spiked fans’ excitement by explaining how the club’s capital expenditure – which is the money spent on fixed assets such as players – is lower than in recent years.

A host of top names, such as Jadon Sancho, James Maddison and Jack Grealish, have been linked with making a switch to Old Trafford.

“As you can imagine we don’t guide on what that will be for obvious reasons,” Baty said when asked how much will be reinvested into the squad.

“What I will say, and we reiterate the last quarter as I’ve just said right now, the level of cap ex [capital expenditure] we have got this year does reflect the accelerated payment and the third receipt profile of last summer’s activity.

“What that really means is our future commitments and liabilities are in a very good place compared to where we might be in a more typical or other years.

“In terms of what that means is we have less liabilities looking forward and that will impact what our cap ex will be.”

Baty was pressed further on how much of the headroom they will reinvest in the playing squad.

And he again kept his cards close to his chest but did point to past transfer windows where the club have spent heavily when the squad is struggling.

“This season is one of rebuild, with many changes to the squad – in terms of players who have left or gone out on loan; new players who we have brought into the club; and academy graduates that we have brought through to the first team,” Woodward said.

“This process will continue as we implement our plan and our footballing vision under Ole and his coaching staff.

“Despite being linked in the media to 111 players in January, our acquisition of just one of them – Bruno Fernandes – is an important step in that direction, demonstrating our commitment to adding experienced, world-class recruits to the exciting crop of academy graduates that are at the heart of this developing team.

“We will take the same planned, disciplined, approach this coming summer.”
