Manchester United fans began tweeting about Harry Maguire shortly after winning a penalty against Leicester City.
The £80million summer signing played no part in the passage of play that lead to Marcus Rashford being fouled in the area and subsequently scoring from the penalty spot.
But the man who chopped down Rashford – Foxes centre-back Caglar Soyuncu – did, prompting the obvious response from supporters.
Soyuncu has been installed as Maguire’s replacement at Leicester this season and a lot has been made of his positive start.
So much so that there have been claims Leicester may have got the better part of the £80m sale of Maguire in that they bagged big bucks and replaced the defender with an equally good centre-back.
As Saturday’s match kicked out at Old Trafford, away supporters were heard singing: “F*** off Maguire, we don’t need you, we’ve got Soyuncu.”
It is for this reason that Soyuncu’s mistake in the early stages of United’s match with the Foxes, which directly lead to a goal, sparked such a reaction from Red Devils fans.
“Soyuncu, the man they reckon is better than Maguire, with a rash challenge on Rashford,” tweeted on fan. Another added: “Wait but isn’t Soyuncu better than Maguire?”
A third wrote: “I remember Leicester fans saying they don’t miss Maguire because Soyuncu is better. Are they still here?” And a fourth concluded, alongside the crying emoji: “But Soyuncu is better than Maguire.”
