Some fans are delighted to finally be making progress on their attempts to sign Maguire, and have even suggested he’s better than Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
“Better than Virgil van Dijk, [hope that helps],” said one fan on Twitter.
“Just as good as VVD …. Great deal for United, wont be long until they’re back #MUFC,” said another.
A third fan added: “Assuming reports are accurate I actually think £60m plus £20m in add-ons for @HarryMaguire93 is decent business in this market.. assume the add-ons are for winning trophies so no chance of @LCFC getting a penny more than £60m…”
Another fan wrote on Twitter: “I don’t care what anyone says I would absolutely love Maguire at United. Him next to Lindelof is brilliant!”
But, some people weren’t as convinced by the decision to spend £80m on Maguire.
One fan claimed: “We are absolute tools for paying this for Maguire. I thought we were going to put a stop to us overpaying for players.”
Another said: “I know United are desperate but wtffffffff. Am I guna [sic] see VVD performances from the guy?”
A third Twitter user added: “£80m for Harry Maguire is just stupid money, but then Man U have a history of overpaying for players.”
It’s believed that Maguire had initially wanted a move to United’s rivals, Manchester City.
He was attracted to the idea of playing Champions League football, as well as working under manager Pep Guardiola.
But City reportedly pulled out of the race after made their first bid for the defender.
Leicester had rejected a £70m bid from United for Maguire before the £80m fee was agreed.
