Manchester United’s search for a director of football has taken a twist, with long-term target Luis Campos reportedly asking to leave Lille.
Campos is widely regarded as one of the most effective transfer chiefs in European football and could be a free agent soon after falling out with the French club over their summer business.
The Portuguese chief worked for Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and the manager even attempted to lure him to Manchester United during his spell at Old Trafford.
However chief executive Ed Woodward was reluctant at the time – and the Premier League giants remain in the hunt for a director football.

But with Campos asking to be released from his contract, as claimed by the Daily Record, the Red Devils may well step up their bid to improve their leadership.
Last week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed talks over a director of football are still ongoing at Manchester United.
Calls for United to hire a Sporting Director have surfaced again after a chaotic transfer window deadline day before the international break.
Even before that, Seville’s highly-rated director of football Monchi criticised United for failing to have an expert in the role.

But Solskjaer has hit back saying: “There’s always people who want to talk about how well they’re running things and how well they’re doing.
“We’ve all got different views on how football should be played and how clubs should be run.
“We’ve got good people running our club and there’s always discussions behind the scenes, which people don’t know about, around how we’re doing things and evaluating everything.
“It’s a process the club is going through all the time, discussing if we’ve got the right people in the right positions.
“It’s not for me to say whether we should have a Director of Football.
“At the moment we’re working with this structure and I feel the results last season we’ve seen a big improvement, fans looked at us and said we’re moving in the right direction. Hopefully we can carry that on this season.”
