Man Utd dealt transfer blow in Matthijs de Ligt chase as rivals hold talks


Matthijs de Ligt is edging closer and closer to move to Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Mail Online .

The teenage defender has been strongly linked to a host of European heavyweights, with Manchester United long believed to be leading the chase when it comes to Premier League interest and Barcelona continuing to monitor the 19-year-old’s progress.

De Ligt is now preparing to head on a break following a fine season which saw Ajax win the Eredivisie title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the club’s skipper also representing the Netherlands in the Nations League finals, where they were beaten 1-0 by Portugal in the final on Sunday.

Speaking after that match in Porto, DeLigt revealed that Portugal talisman Cristiano Ronaldo asked him to come and join him in Serie A.

“He asked me to come to Juventus ,” De Ligt told NOS.

“I was a little shocked by that question, that’s why I laughed. I didn’t understand him at first.

“Now I will go on vacation, I’ll think carefully about what is best for me and then I’ll decide.

“For a young player like me, it’s important to go to a club where I can play consistently. That’s the main issue.”

That club is now said to be PSG though, with the Ligue 1 champions having seemingly made a significant breakthrough in talks in the last 24 hours.

Barcelona were long considered to be the front-runners for De Ligt’s signature, but Ernesto Valverde’s side have seemingly been blown out of the water by the riches on offer at PSG, with United having also turned De Ligt’s head due to the huge terms they were able to offer him on his contract,
