However, travelling Red fans were accused of aiming homophobic chants at home supporters and it will have to be seen if the referee’s report makes note of any incidents.

The Blues were forced to make an official complaint to the FA and Kick It Out over similar slurs aimed at them during the 1-0 defeat to West Ham in December.

While Everton confirmed they were investigating reports of homophobic chanting during their 3-1 win over Frank Lampard’s side a week later.

And Nottingham Forest fans allegedly aimed the same chant at Chelsea supporters in their FA Cup clash last year.

A statement from Kick It Out following the Hammers game read: “We have informed the FA, and reiterate our message: the ‘Rent Boy’ chant is homophobic and must be treated as such.”

Homophobic chants were to be banned under plans unveiled by MPs last summer.

On the pitch United had an evening to remember as a third win over Chelsea this season cut the deficit on Frank Lampard’s fourth-placed side to six points.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team rode their luck with Harry Maguire fortunate not to see red for kicking out at Michy Batshuayi.

The Blues also had two goals ruled out by tight VAR decisions, as their rivals completed their first league double over them since 1987-88.
