Man Utd coach Michael Carrick giving specific advice to key Ole Gunnar Solskjaer player

Manchester United coach Michael Carrick is helping Scott McTominay become a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.

McTominay has impressed for the Red Devils this season and was at his imposing best as the Red Devils beat Leicester 1-0 on Saturday.

The Scotland international divides Manchester United fans but is silencing any critics with assured displays in the middle of the park.

And The Athletic claim United coach Carrick is giving particular advice to McTominay on the club’s training ground.

Carrick himself had a good United career.

The former England international spent a decade at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles along the way.

And it seems the United legend is now trying to impart some wisdom on players in Solskjaer’s squad.

McTominay was seen as a player who could leave when Jose Mourinho was sacked back in December.

Mourinho gave the 22-year-old his debut back in 2018 and McTominay even replaced Paul Pogba at times last year.

And he’s on his way to being a key player for United, having started all of their Premier League matches so far this season.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT Tony Cascarino believes McTominay could be the solution to the Red Devils’ midfield issues.

United lack depth in the middle of the park following the recent exits of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.

But Cascarino has hailed McTominay, saying: “They will miss the tenacity and ball-winning ability of Ander Herrera, but McTominay is a solid option in that defensive midfielder role.

“He’s not a world beater but will be a valuable player.

“United are a club who are going through a transition that will take years thanks to the neglect of the past few seasons.

“Solskjaer is putting them back on the right track and hard-working, committed young players like McTominay will be vital to helping him this season.”

McTominay feels confident at United, admitted he always had his sights set on being a regular starter.

“That was my goal two years ago and last year,” McTominay said in the summer when asked if he can be a regular starter.

“That’s always been my goal. It’s my ambition to be a regular no.6, no.8, a box to box player – that’s my main ambition. It’s important that I really go for that now.

“Obviously there is an opportunity there and you’ve got to take it with both hands. Last year I had some decent performances and it’s important that I carry on from that.

“We’re in the Europa League this year and it’s important that I continue.”
