Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher agreed Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was fortunate to have avoided a red card against Chelsea.

The United skipper clashed with Michy Batshuayi midway through the opening period and appeared to aim a kick at his opponent while he was on the floor, lying in front of the Chelsea dugout.

Anthony Taylor failed to spot the offence but referred the decision to VAR which absolved Maguire of any blame, despite the incident drawing comparisons with the offence which saw Heung-min Son dismissed by the same referee during Tottenham’s defeat against Chelsea in December.

Reacting to the decision, Keane said: ‘He’s a lucky, lucky boy,’ said Keane. ‘Maguire, maybe because it’s his personality, a calm lad, but he definitely kicks out.’

Jamie Carragher was in agreement, saying: ‘Yeah, I think it’s a red card. The referee can’t see it, that’s got to go to VAR.

‘It’s the inconsistency that frustrates people. It’s not gonna go away, different people using it. But Harry Maguire’s a lucky boy.’

United benefited from VAR’s ruling and took the lead shortly before half-time when Anthony Martial headed home Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pinpoint cross.

Chelsea though they had drawn level when Kurt Zouma powered home a Mason Mount corner 10 minutes after the interval but VAR spotted Cesar Azpilicueta’s push on Brandon Williams and chalked off the goal.

Frank Lampard’s frustration was subsequently compounded when Maguire powered home a header following a superb Bruno Fernandes corner shortly afterwards, before VAR again came to United’s rescue, ruling out Olivier Giroud’s header for offside.
