Man Utd boss Solskjaer admits they’re better in shootouts than ‘proper games’ after Rochdale horror show

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted Manchester United are better at penalty shootouts than “proper games.”

The Old Trafford outfit could only manage a 1-1 draw with Rochdale before setting up a Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea from 12 yards.

Solskjaer said: “We go 1-0 up in many games and again we go 1-0 up and you think ‘go on then’.

“It’s the key now and it’s a learning curve for these boys. We need to go for the second.

“At this club you don’t just sit back and hope that’s enough. If you settle for good enough that’s not what we want.

“We handled it really well. I’m very pleased with the confidence. You know we’re better in penalty shoot outs than in proper games.”

United earned a fourth round tie against the Blues, who they beat 4-0 on the opening weekend of the season.

Solskjaer said: “We played them first game of the season and played them in the cup last year. It slots nicely in a couple of weeks with loads of travelling.

“That’s how it is and we’ve got to make the best of it and I’m sure we will.

“That’s the type of group this is, that’s the type of club we are. We’re going to relish it.”

Mason Greenwood, 17, was on target again as he was with the winner against Astana in the Europa League.

Solskjaer said: “He’s got two great feet and scored the penalty with his right. It must be a nightmare for defenders with him one on one in the box.

“He can go both ways which for me is fantastic. You can just see that he’s got quality.

“He will get his share of games. He’s young and we have to allow him to grow.”

Even in defeat it was a special night for Rochdale’s Luke Matheson, who scored the equaliser in the 78th minute.

The 16-year-old passed his GCSE’s with flying colours earlier this year and will be back at school today.

Solskjaer said: “Testament to their coaches and their players, who kept believing. There are different ways of playing football and they came here and had a go which made a very open and entertaining game.”
