Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals how he 'RUINED' 1999 Champions League final

Manchester United were 1-0 down heading into injury time at the Nou Camp 20 years ago as they searched a historic treble.

Teddy Sheringham netted 30 seconds into added time to give United hope, though extra-time looked inevitable.

But Solskjaer, who had only come on as a late substitute, scored a last-gasp winner as he poked in Sheringham’s flick on.

It meant United sealed the Champions League and added to their Premier League and FA Cup haul that season.

But Solskjaer has revealed he wanted to showcase his talents in extra time.

“I was quite focused on what was going to come,” Solskjaer told ESPN FC.

“My feeling was that I had 30 minutes in a Champions League final and I had to make the most of it.

“I felt great and I was just looking forward to doing something in extra time. But I went and ruined it.”

Manchester United head back to the Nou Camp this week as they face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final.

The Red Devils are 1-0 down going into the second leg with many expecting Barca to be too strong on home ground.

That’s despite United turning around a two-goal deficit against PSG in the previous round.

And Solskjaer will take more inspiration from that match than he will the 1999 final.

“No I won’t [take inspiration from 1999], because it was against Bayern, it was a final, it was different,” he said.

“We will use the PSG match, we will use the Juventus game away, because we’ve beaten some good teams away from home this year and played against some great players.

“We know that if we’re at our best and if we make Barcelona….we had them flustered at times here as well.

“Yes, they controlled the game towards the end, they had the possession, but they never really bothered us in our own half.”
