Man Utd add Norwich star Todd Cantwell to 'four-man British transfer shortlist'

Manchester United have added Norwich City ace Todd Cantwell to a four-man British transfer shortlist, according to reports.

Attacking midfielder Cantwell has caught the eye of top Premier League clubs with six goals for Norwich – second only to nine-goal Teemu Pukki on the Canaries’ scoring charts.

Cantwell has been monitored by Mancheser City for a number of years, while Tottenham are also believed to be tracking his progress.

And now United have joined the race for the 21-year-old, according to the Daily Mail .

The publication says United have added him to a list of midfield targets which also comprises Leicester City’s James Maddison, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Sean Longstaff of Newcastle United.

All four fit the profile of young, British talent that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels will benefit United as the club rebuilds following several years of underachievement.

Solskjaer has had to rethink United’s January transfer plans after injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba left him with a dearth of quality in midfield.

McTominay is out for two months with knee ligament damage, while Pogba has had to have an operation on an ankle and foot problem and will be sidelined for at least a month.

United had just begun to discover some form and have hauled themselves up to fifth in the Premier League table – but manager Solskjaer now fears their momentum could be derailed.

Jack Grealish is also a target for United but Villa face a relegation battle and would be unlikely to sell in January

He said: “Sometimes you think one or two additions would do nicely because we are building towards something, but it depends on whether those players for us are available.

“We always want competition for places but we’ve been suffering in midfield and it’s a big blow that Paul is now out and Scott McTominay is out for a few months.”

Norwich are unlikely to sell Cantwell in January, however, as the midfielder is contracted to the club until 2022 and the Canaries will need all their best players to help haul them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Villa are in a similar predicament just one point above the relegation zone, while Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has said he is determined to keep his players together as the second-placed Foxes bid to secure Champions League qualification.
