Man Utd ace Harry Maguire makes donation to hometown amid coronavirus lockdown

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has again been playing his part amid the UK’s coronavirus lockdown – by donating food packages to the elderly in his hometown.

Maguire was hailed by teammate Marcus Rashford on Wednesday after the skipper co-ordinated the United squad’s response to the Players Together NHS fund.

The fund was this week launched by Premier League players with the aim of donating millions of pounds to NHS charities to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

But Maguire’s efforts haven’t ended there, as the big-hearted England defender has arranged for food parcels packed with everyday essentials to be donated to people aged 70 or over in his hometown of Mossley in South Yorkshire.

Maguire’s donations will also help support a couple of local businesses, as the parcels will be made up in a shop in Mossley and delivered by a fruit and veg firm.

The United skipper hailed the nation’s efforts to support the NHS after United announced a package of measures designed to help the fight against coronavirus.

United have sent 16 of the club’s ‘Foundation’ vehicles to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and the NHS Manchester Foundation Trust Charity.

The fleet has taken more than 3,500 gifts for NHS staff, including the unsung heroes of the hospital cleaning and backroom staff.

The first wave of donations was made by the club’s Foundation to local hospitals last week, while the vehicles have also been put on standby with volunteer drivers available to support NHS courier operations.

United have donated all 30,000 perishable goods stocked at their Old Trafford stadium for use until the summer to staff to food banks, hospitals and other local charitable organisations.

Old Trafford has been placed on a reserve list as a possible temporary blood donation centre, and the club are continuing to offer NHS workers staying at Hotel Football free car parking for as long as it is required.

Former United players Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, who own Hotel Football near Old Trafford and the Stock Exchange hotel in Manchester City centre, have allowed NHS staff to stay free of charge in the two hotels during the coronavirus pandemic.
