MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 WATFORD

FT: Done and dusted! Manchester United have scraped through against a battling Watford side, who went to Old Trafford and had over 20 shots!

92: Free-kick at the death! It’s around 25-yards from goal in a scoring position!

Now this is drama. Up steps Roberto Pereyra…. waste! He clips it into the penalty area but referee Stuart Attwell sports an infringement and that should be that.

91: Pereira is booked for time wasting.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 WATFORD | DOUCOURE

89: Hello! Late drama incoming at Old Trafford? It’s no less than Watford deserve.

United’s defence fail to deal with a cross and Abdoulaye Doucoure dinks the ball past David de Gea.

Three minutes of added time…

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 WATFORD

76: That was Anthony Martial’s last contribution. He heads off with Marcos Rojo taking his place. Gray replaces Deulofeu for Watford.

74: This is the first time since the 1995-96 season (Scholes, Cole, Giggs, Cantona) that Man Utd have had four players score 10+ goals in a single Premier League campaign (Martial, Rashford, Lukaku, Pogba).

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 WATFORD | MARTIAL

72: Game, set and match. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have barely been out of their own half but their lead is doubled.

Suspicion of offside but Anthony Martial is sent through by Jesse Lingard and bundles the ball past Ben Foster.

66: Another update, another chance for the visitors. Substitute Kiko Femenia thumps one at David de Gea from all of 35 yards.

63: Double change for OGS. He introduces Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira for

62: Will Hughes unleashes his third attempt of the afternoon when curling it just wide of the left hand post.

60: United are going to need a second here. Watford still dictating terms.

57: Watford aren’t afraid to throw bodies forward here. The Hornets are camped inside the Manchester United half looking for this equaliser. It nearly arrives as Daryl Janmaat slices a decent chance over the bar. De Gea is then forced into action to palm away Roberto Pereyra’s strike.

56: I suspect that’s an injury because Daryl Janmaat runs off the pitch and straight down the tunnel. Kiko Femenia takes his place.

54: Watford with some nice interplay down the left results in Janmaat firing miles over the crossbar.

51: It’s Karel Poborsky’s 47th birthday today. No relevance to anything but nothing was happening and I thought you would enjoy that little factoid.

48: Watford start brightly again with the menacing Deulofeu testing De Gea from distance. Nothing to trouble the Spanish stopper.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 WATFORD

45: And we’re back underway here folks. No changes for either side. I would expect to see Romelu Lukaku at some stage.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 WATFORD

HT: Manchester United have not lost a game at Old Trafford when leading at half time since 1984. It’s not been vintage stuff from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side but when you’ve got a striker like Marcus Rashford – that’s not always a problem.

47: Brave defending from Chris Smalling, who sticks his head in to clear Gerard Deulofeu’s free-kick before Miguel Britos can connect.

45: Manchester United have had three players score 10+ Premier League goals in 2018-19 (Rashford, Lukaku, Pogba) – the first time they have achieved this feat since 2012-13 (Hernandez, Rooney, van Persie).

Three minutes added time for all these injuries.

44: Worry for United fans and my FPL side as Young goes down injured. Looks like an ankle issue. Diogo Dalot came down from the bench to warm up but Young hops to his feet.

42: The Red Devils have grown in confidence since Marcus Rashford’s opener. They might also take confidence from the Premier League table – which currently sees them leapfrog Arsenal into the Champions League places.

39: Deulofeu has a couple of cotton buds stuck up his nose and he’s fine to continue. Not the most stylish look.

38: Lengthy pause while Gerard Deulofeu receives treatment after being fallen on by Phil Jones. Looks to have taken a blow to the nose. No pun intended…

35: Incredible stop from Ben Foster to deny Anthony Martial from close range. Manchester United on top now and should be two ahead.

32: Marcus Rashford has scored 10+ Premier League goals in a single season for the first time in his career. Cant imagine it’ll be the last.

30: Well that is straight from the sucker-punch textbook. Manchester United barely had a sniff in the opening 25 minutes but one moment of quality has undone Javi Gracia’s side.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 WATFORD | RASHFORD

28: Against the run of play – but Manchester United don’t care one jot!

Marcus Rashford is slipped in by the marauding Luke Shaw, and the England international makes no mistake when cooly slotting past Ben Foster.

25: The hosts have been all over the place in this first 20 minutes. Maybe Pogba just doesn’t play well under full time United managers? I wouldn’t spend much time on that theory…

23: Just a couple of goals in the Premier League. Wes ‘goal machine’ Morgan has scored his second-consecutive goal to give Leicester the lead over Bournemouth. Conor Coady scored an own goal in the opening two minutes to give Burnley a 1-0 advantage.

20: Chance for Manchester United! It really should be 1-0 to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as Martial plays the ball through to Shaw, who completely ignores the unmarked Marcus Rashford in the six-yard box.

18: Booked! Will Hughes wins the yellow card sweepstake when dragging Paul Pogba down.

15: Another chance… for Watford! Troy Deeney nods down Gerard Deulofeu’s lofted cross but David De Gea reacts quickly tipping it away.

Deeney is causing Smalling and Jones all sorts of problems. He’s won every ball so far.

12: First half-chance for United. Pogba looks to thread Rashford through but Kabasele is quickly across to make the challenge.

9: Quite a strange start at Old Trafford. There’s a party atmosphere for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game as permanent manager – but Watford continue to dictate play.

The Red Devils looking a touch rusty after the international break.

6: Eh? Gerard Deulofeu is off the field having his undershorts cut off with scissors! I’m assuming they were the wrong colour?

The first chance of the game falls to Watford as Pereyra slips in Doucoure, who just drags his shot wide of the near post.

4: Close! Now that’s quite a surprise.

Watford have started on the front-foot with Manchester United look a bit lethargic. Deulofeu has Deeney waiting in the middle but decides to delay.. delay.. and delay some more allowing Smalling to recover.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 WATFORD

1: OK, we’re underway at Old Trafford. One heck of a reception for the new boss as he emerged from the tunnel.

Prediction? If I absolutely have to give you an answer I’d probably say a 1-1 draw.

ZZ talks PP

14:50: That headline just sounds wrong, doesn’t it?

Anyway, Zinedine Zidane has suggested that Manchester United’s Paul Pogba can join the Spanish giants one day.

“I like Paul Pogba a lot, I know him personally,” Zidane said. “He is a player who brings a lot, few are able to do what he does.

“He knows how to defend, attack. He knows how to do everything on the pitch.

“But for everything that are rumours, he does not play for my team, he plays for Manchester United and you have to respect that.

“And if it is possible one day, after his experience at Manchester United, he could come to Real Madrid. Why not?”

Hmmmmm. You get the feeling that this story will rumble on throughout the summer.

A word from Ole

14:45: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on his Manchester United team selection: “We feel that it’s a good team. There’s a couple that we’re still nurturing. Jesse, Romelu they’re not ready to play a full game yet. Victor, he’s not injured, he’s had some issues, but the team is good. The training week has been really good.”

Twitter round-up

Jayden: Juan Mata starting is usually the kiss of death. Been anonymous for years now. Slows the game down and offers very little threat. If we’re going with this two striker diamond system, we need a MUCH better no. 10.

Jordan: Hopefully we can beat Watford, they don’t have much too play for, need 3 points with Spurs playing Liverpool. Important game for Ole’s tenure… 2 weeks off players are fresh, need to take the game to Watford!

Elsewhere…

14:35: It’s that time of the year again! The time of the year we wheel out the word ‘permutations’ for its only ever run-out.

Huddersfield have already escaped the embarrassment of being the worst side in Premier League history – that undignified record belongs to the Derby team that managed 11 points in 2007-08.

But were they to lose all seven of their remaining games then only the Rams would have performed more poorly and the Terriers could even match them for the earliest Premier League relegation on Saturday.

Burnley beat Wolves, Southampton beat Brighton and Huddersfield lose to Palace – The Terriers will be relegated from the Premier League today.

Abdoulaye Doucoure

14:30: Javi Gracia insists Abdoulaye Doucoure does not need to leave Watford this summer as he can realise his ambitions at Vicarage Road.

If you missed it – Doucoure is on PSG’s radar and recently made comments in which he outlined his desire to win titles and play in the Champions League.

“When Doucoure said he wanted to grow, I said that I’d like him to grow with me in this team. We can do it together!” Gracia said.

“If we are able to grow step by step, then we have the players to improve day by day. We have a good mentality and a good attitude. If we carry on working, not just Doucoure but all the squad, then I think we can grow together.”

Quite optimistic thinking, Javi.

Twitter round-up

Nakul: Dumb and Dumber back at CB.

Joe: Excited to see how Martial and Rashford work together up top today. Has the potential to be a really exciting partnership.

Graham: What happened to the match day suits?!

I was wondering that, Graham. The United players arrived in their tracksuits for today’s showdown. Trouble at the dry cleaners perhaps?

Be wise, Ole

14:15: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to spend smartly. Not like me paying £6.50 for a bottle of beer last night. I don’t think I’ll ever get over that.

Anyway, the Norwegian knows their domestic and European hopes can only be improved with new faces and discussions were held with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward long before his permanent appointment.

United tend to make three or four signings every summer and Solskjaer has vowed to act intelligently in this ever-inflating transfer market.

“United is a club that has money, and that has to be spent in a reasonable way,” he said. “People who know me, know that I will use that in a good way.

“We have a plan with the club, they have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep.

“We will not spend money just to spend money.”

Latest

14:10: Manchester City are in cruise control against relegated Fulham. OK, not officially relegated but 13 points off safety with a -43 goal difference and six games remaining – the writing is on the wall.

Bernardo Silva grabbed the opener inside five minutes and Sergio Aguero doubled the visitors’ lead soon after. The Argentine was forced off with an injury on the hour-mark, which is obviously devastating news for the FPL community.

My thoughts are with them…

Team news

14:05: Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic have shaken off the injuries that forced them out of international duty to start.

Romelu Lukaku is able to take his place on the bench after overcoming an issue of his own, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making four changes from the FA Cup loss at Wolves in his first match as permanent manager.

Victor Lindelof is replaced in defence by Phil Jones, while Watford boss Javi Gracia made five changes at Old Trafford.

The line-ups

14:00: And here is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first starting XI as permanent Manchester United manager. What a time to be alive.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Jones, Shaw, Herrera, Matic, Pogba, Mata, Martial, Rashford.

Subs: Romero, Lukaku, Lingard, Pereira, Rojo, Fred, Dalot.

Watford XI: Foster, Janmaat, Britos, Kabasele, Masina, Capoue, Hughes, Doucoure, Pereyra, Deulofeu, Deeney.

Subs: Gomes, Success, Cathcart, Gray, Quina, Femenia, Holebas.

The honeymoon is over

13:55: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ success as interim manager made his permanent claim to the Manchester United job impossible to ignore.

But having auditioned so superbly, a less sympathetic phase begins as he works to prove he was the right choice despite his inexperience.

A run of two defeats to Arsenal and Wolves must be ended against Watford to avoid any early-reign jitters setting in.

Twitter round-up

Stephen: Despite all the positivity with Ole’s appointment, it’s imperative that the team remember we went into the break with two poor performances resulting in 2 defeats. Need to get at Watford from the off & get our top 4 quest back on track!

Shan: I’ll be honest I don’t expect OGS to win us the title next season but within 3 years we will, we need prepare the right way like Liverpool have in order to make sure we’re consistent title contenders rather than taking a shot at it every couple of seasons.

Afternoon…

13:50: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

Everyone feeling splendid and tremendous today? I went to a birthday party last night and made an astonishing rookie error.

I danced.

Back gone, hamstrings pulled, knees packed up and dignity nearing an all-time low…

Moving swiftly on, we’re at Old Trafford to see whether PERMANENT Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can overcome Watford and leapfrog Arsenal into the top four.

Team news and line-ups incoming…

MANCHESTER UNITED vs WATFORD

There are questions over the fitness of Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial after they pulled out of playing in internationals.

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, who went on a warm-weather training camp to Dubai, will be hoping to return, while Eric Bailly is a doubt and Victor Lindelof’s partner gave birth over the international break.

Jose Holebas will miss out for Watford because of an ankle injury. The Hornets have no injuries to report for the players involved in the recent international break. Tom Cleverley has a calf problem and his fitness is being monitored, but the midfielder is destined to miss out against his former club.

Last season: Man Utd 1 Watford 0, Watford 2 Man Utd 4

Last five league matches: Man Utd W D W W L; Watford W W L W L
