Manchester United and Manchester City are set to compete for the signing of Leicester City’s Harry Maguire following the conclusion of England’s UEFA Nations League campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the lookout for a first-choice central defender while Pep Guardiola is after a replacement for Vincent Kompany who has become player-manager at Anderlecht.

According to Sky Sports News, Leicester City do not want to sell Maguire but value him at around £80m which would eclipse the £75m fee that Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk.

A deal in excess of £80m would also make Maguire comfortably the most expensive English player of all-time ahead of Kyle Walker who cost City £50m when moving from Spurs in 2017.

Maguire has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in the Premier League since impressing for Leicester following his £16m move from Hull City in 2017 as well as for England at last summer’s World Cup.

Despite being linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium, Maguire is contracted to Leicester until 2023 and recently claimed that the club are moving in a positive direction under Brendan Rodgers.

‘Leicester’s an exciting club to be at. Brendan has really improved the team in the recent months, and he’s someone we’re looking forward to working with. I’m sure he will take the club forward,’ he said.

United have been linked with a host of high-profile centre backs this summer including Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, while they are also interested in recruiting Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Maguire featured 31 times for Leicester in the Premier League last season, scoring three goals.
