Man tries to dye carpets to save money and ends up ruining the living room

A man who attempted to give his home a revamp on a budget found he instead was left needing entirely new carpets after things went very, very wrong.

Wanting to breathe new life into his existing carpets, he decided to try put the popular Dylon dye pods, which are designed to be used in washing machines to change the colour of clothes and soft furnishings.

He posted to the DIY On A Budget UK Facebook group, having seen others share the results of their own successful attempts on the same page in the past.

The original carpet was a neural beige colour and he tested a small amount of the dark dye in a corner to see how it would turn out.

Happy with the results, he decided to go all in – and was left to regret it.

It didn’t quite turn out as he hoped

He says he’ll be needing a new carpet

Finding humour in his failed attempt, he shared photos of his carpet which is now patchy and ultimately ruined, as reported by The Sun.

He wrote: “Tried the Dylon dye [on] one a small part of carpet. Thought to myself that looks alright, so I did half my living room! Looks like I will be needing a new carpet lol.”

Some were quick to poke fun at the DIY disaster, as one wrote: “God, you must have been bored. Don’t do anything anymore around the house please. Your girlfriend must be mad.”

A second replied: “Oh dear lol at least you tried – I will not be attempting this.”

More sympathetic members attempted to help, as one suggested: “If you finish it then give it a second coat, then get a couple of packs of alum from the chemist, sprinkle over and brush in, leave a couple of days then hoover, all should be OK – the alum sets the dye.”
