Man has part of his penis amputated after wrapping it in elastic band – to stop tumour growing

A MAN had to have part of his penis amputated after he “strangulated” it with a rubber band – in a bid to stop a cancerous tumour from growing.

The 65-year-old went to hospital complaining of pain in his genitals, which he said started two months earlier but had gradually got worse.

When doctors at Koto Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, examined him they discovered he had a “penile tumour in the shape of a cauliflower”.

Graphic images published in the journal Urology Case Reports show the cancerous growth around the glans – or the head – of the penis.

Docs initially suspected it was penile cancer, but later biopsies confirmed it was squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer.

Double wrapped

But they also realised that the patient had been attempting to stop the tumours from getting any bigger by wrapping an elastic band around the base of his penis – at least twice.

It’s unclear how long it had been there but by the time they removed it, the rubber had cut into the skin and damaged the tissue.

Blood poisoning or gangrene had yet to set in, however, surgeons still had to cut off part of the man’s penis to remove the cancer and dead flesh.

It’s a surgery known as partial penectomy and is the most common treatment for all stages of penile cancer.

The Japanese medics, led by Dr Takahiro Yoshida, wrote: “Although the penile strangulation by a rubber band was found at the root of the penis, the [swelling] in the glans penis and around the strangulation were slight, and the blood flow… was not bad.”

Fortunately, his cancer hadn’t spread and he had no serious complications from the surgery so he was allowed home two weeks later.

Rings, tubes, strings…

In their report, the doctors revealed other previous cases in which surgeons had found metallic rings and tubes, plastic bottles, strings and threads had been used to strangulate pen’s penises.

Earlier this month, we reported how a man needed to have a metal nut cut off his penis after getting it stuck when he squeezed it on for sexual pleasure.

The unnamed 34-year-old had also suffered penile strangulation and needed to have the hex nut chopped off with a diamond disc cutter.

Doctors at the United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong said the man suffered two “superficial” cuts during the 94-minute procedure.

In a separate case, a 28-year-old South African man found himself on the surgeon’s table after slipping his wedding ring over his penis “for erotic reasons”‘.

He needed the blood drained from his member by a huge needle after it swelled up so much the band became stuck.

It was stuck so tight doctors were unable to cut it off with a surgical saw.

Penile strangulation is a rarely described medical emergency, but occasionally pops up.

There are no proper guidelines for treatment, and the academic journal advised that a doctor should decide on the best removal method on a case-by-case basis.
