Team news – Manchester City

What can I say? Never back yourself to predict a Pep Guardiola starting XI.

The Spanish tactician has made eight changes from the side beaten by Manchester United in early March. Eric Garcia partners Aymeric Laporte in central defence with Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker either side.

Normal service in midfield with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling flanking centre-forward Gabriel Jesus.

Yes… Sergio Aguero is on the bench and that’s my FPL captain out of commission.

Team News – Arsenal

Arsenal make five changes from their last fixture with Mesut Ozil left out of the squad completely.

The quick summary is that Mikel Arteta has placed his faith in youth. Eddie Nketiah starts ahead of Alexandre Lacazette while Bukayo Saka, Joe Willock and Matteo Guendouzi also make the cut.

Shkodran Mustafi is partnered by January loan signing Pablo Mari.

There’s also the exciting full-back pair of Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney, who’ve both managed to shake off injury troubles to start.

Starting XI…

And the team news arrives. The headlines news? Sergio Aguero doesn’t start… Fume from the FPL fans incoming. No sign of Mesut Ozil either – not as big of a surprise.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Garcia, Laporte, Mendy, Gundogan, D Silva, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus.

Subs: Carson, Aguero, Zinchenko, Rodrigo, B Silva, Fernandinho, Otamendi, Foden.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Bellerin, Mustafi, Mari, Tierney, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Willock, Saka, Aubameyang, Nketiah.

Subs: Martinez, Ceballos, Lacazette, Maitland-Niles, Pepe, Luiz, Nelson, Kolasinac, Martinelli.

What a mess…

Well the update from Villa Park is that Hawkeye (the VAR goal-line technology) wasn’t working. Terrific insight from the officials.

However, the good news is that it IS now fixed. Not quite good enough for manager Chris Wilder, who looks even more aggrieved than usual.

It remains 0-0 between Aston Villa and Sheffield United with around five minutes of the second half gone.

Incidentally… why on earth didn’t the normal VAR tell referee Michael Oliver that the ball went over the line? Might have been an idea, lads.

Welcome back…

How’s lockdown treated everyone?

After a brief flirt with alcoholism, an unhealthy puzzle obsession and shaving off my hair (yes, really) I quite enjoyed the routine.

I managed to shift 10kg, folks. Just pausing for the round of applause there… I also attempted to learn the guitar before quickly realising that I have no musical talent. You win some, you lose some.

My full list of lockdown pros and cons will be published a little bit later when I have nothing left to say about Manchester City vs Arsenal. You lucky, lucky people.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester City vs Arsenal.

So… we’re back! And the Premier League hasn’t taken long to deliver a huge dollop of controversy. Not sure if you’ve been watched the horror show at Villa Park but Sheffield United were wrongly denied the opener.

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland clearly took the ball behind the line but referee Michael Oliver’s watch didn’t buzz and the goal-line technology didn’t award the goal.

Who knows… perhaps VAR is still furloughed.

Anyway, I’ll keep you updated with the action in the midlands as the evening continues but our primary focus is at the Etihad Stadium this evening as Pep Guardiola looks to prolong the title race.

It’s master vs apprentice, it’s red vs blue, it’s… well it’s Manchester City vs Arsenal as you well know. No hype needed here – I’m just pleased to be watching something other than decade-old box-sets.

Let’s get going!

MANCHESTER CITY vs ARSENAL – TEAM NEWS

Manchester City have no injury worries ahead of tonight’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, although Pep Guardiola says his players are not yet fully fit.

Centre-back Aymeric Laporte and winger Leroy Sane are both available for selection, with the German international having been sidelined with a knee injury since August.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta also has no injury concerns although long-term absentees Lucas Torreira and Calum Chambers are still in need of match fitness.

“We cannot use the ice baths – it is not allowed!” Guardiola said with a laugh.

“So, I don’t know now. We are going to do the best for them, take care of them, try to organise and do the best facilities for the players to be fit.

“But you know the other leagues, the last minutes, how they suffer the players to arrive in the last minute and how difficult it is to recover and play the other game.

“The problem is not to play one game, the first one, even the second one. It’s with the lack of recovery, you have to play another game with a lack of physical training or physical condition or being prepared. That is a problem.

“But we have to adapt so there is not another issue, pray a little bit and be lucky that our staff, me, myself as a head coach, try and take the right decisions about the players who believe they can play more minutes than the other one.

“That is the main target of this period.”
