Man City stars sing Wonderwall during dressing room blackout – before Burnley win

Manchester City’s morale-boosting in over Burnley on Tuesday was inspired by a team rendition of Wonderwall during a dressing-room blackout at Turf Moor.

City arrived at Turf Moor to find the away dressing room in darkness, with emergency lighting required to help them find their way around before the problem was fixed.

But Pep Guardiola’s side turned the mood lighting to their advantage, with players using the lights on their phone to create disco lighting as the squad gave a rousing rendition of classic Oasis song Wonderwall.

The 1990s anthem – penned by Oasis lead guitarist and City fan Noel Gallagher – has become synonymous with the club’s success in recent years.

And it certainly seemed to have the desired effect, with City turning on the style to beat Burnley 4-1 thanks to a double from Gabriel Jesus and goals from Rodri and Riyahd Mahrez, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

City players also had a post-match celebration in their dressing room after the win – which might seem strange to some observers, as Guardiola’s men still face a huge task to try and overhaul Liverpool , who host Everton in Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby.

However, it wasn’t so much the result, or the move back into second place in the table, which had City’s players in raptures – rather it was the nature of the victory, with the Mancunians looking back on top form after three games without a win in all competitions.

“It was a great night for us,” said midfielder Rodri afterwards, in quotes reported by the Manchester Evening News .

“We need this victory for the team. We were having a party because we needed this victory to have the confidence.

“Today is a big victory for the team. It’s a long way to the end of the season but it’s important.”

The confidence-boosting performance also came five days before City face fierce rivals Manchester United in Saturday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
