Majorca Coronavirus fears: Health chiefs try to calm British tourists over outbreak

Health chiefs on the holiday island have stressed that all the protocols are being followed and as yet there is no confirmation that the married couple and their two daughters have got the illness. They say Mallorca has already had four scares which all proved negative.

The British family are not showing any signs of coronavirus to date but are being kept in hospital for observation.

The husband went to the island’s Son Espases hospital in the Majorca capital of Palma on Friday to report that he had been in contact with a positive case of coronavirus in France.

All four family members were immediately admitted and the man was isolated. Samples were taken from the four Brits to send to the laboratory of Majadahonda (Madrid).

The Ministry of Health has issued “a message of tranquility and confidence” in the work of professionals waiting for the results of the samples to determine whether or not it is coronavirus.

Sources from the Ministry of Health said yesterday that in the last days there have been four suspicions of possible cases in the Balearic Islands, but that all four have been ruled out because it was the flu.

France was the first country in Europe to have a positive coronavirus case, with three confirmations on January 25.

Currently there are already six people infected in the country by the Wuhan virus, without any deaths.

At the moment in Spain there is only one confirmed case, a German tourist who remains isolated on the island of La Gomera, Canary Islands but he has no signs of illness despite the positive test.

The British family live in Marratxí, a region of Mallorca which has about 28,000 residents.

Health chiefs say it will be between 24 and 48 hours before they know if any of the four members of a British family being kept in isolation in hospital in Majorca have the coronavirus.

The husband and wife and their two children are under observation in the Son Espases Hospital in Palma.

Tests have been sent to the National Centre for Microbiology in Madrid.

The family, who live in Mallorca, were admitted yesterday after the father reported being in contact in France a few weeks ago with a person who has been tested positive for the virus.

Neither he, his wife or their seven-year-old daughter are showing any symptoms and are not ill.

However, their other daughter, aged ten, has the flu and fever but is otherwise in good health, medical specialists reported at a press conference this Saturday morning.
