Maisie Williams: Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner makes surprising admission about friend

The Arya Stark actress, 22, has been best friends with her co-star Sophie Turner, 23, since they first met during auditions for Game of Thrones. Having grown up in the public eye starring in the hit HBO fantasy drama together, the pair have only become closer over the years. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Sansa Stark star recalled: “We were pretty much best friends from that second on.” Maisie Williams chipped in: “I thought Sophie was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

“I get why they do chemistry reads, because when it’s right, it’s so right,” she continued.

“We’re best friends. And they could see that all those years ago, and it must have been real magic watching these two girls have the best time together.”

At the end of Game of Thrones season one, Stark sisters were torn apart when their lives went in different directions following the execution of their father Eddard Stark (played by Sean Bean).

After that, it would be several seasons before they would get to film another scene together.

However, Sophie admitted, surprisingly, that may have been a blessing for the cast and crew.

“We were a nightmare to work with,” she said. “If you’re working with your best friend, you will never get any work done, ever.

“Anytime we tried to be serious about anything, it’s just the hardest thing in the word.

“I think they really regretted putting us in scenes together,” she added. “It was difficult.”

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss agreed with Sophie’s recollection events, telling the publication even now they are older, the pair still cause mischief.

“It was great to have two insanely witty people playing off each other between setups,” they said.

“Although they did decided to start talking in a Northern accent, which may be real and may be their own invention — being Americans, we couldn’t tell.

“But they would sometimes talk in this accent all day,” they revealed.

“Every once in a while it would find its way into a scene, and we’d have to remind them Sansa and Arya don’t talk like that.”

Away from the show, Maisie and Sophie’s friendship is such that the latter has even appointed her co-star as one of her maids of honour for her wedding.

Although she tied the knot with her beau Joe Jonas, 29, at a spontaneous ceremony officiated by an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas last month, the pair will be celebrating their marriage with a second ceremony later this year.

Maisie, meanwhile, tends to keep quiet about her own love life.

After previously being linked to her former classmate Ollie Jackson, rumours recently emerged she may have moved on and struck up a romance with communications director Reuben Selby.

Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Maisie Williams asking for comment.

Game of Thrones season 8 airs on HBO in the US on Sundays 9pm ET and on SkyAtlantic and NOW TV in the UK on Mondays at 2am & 9pm BST
