Madonna starts ageism row as new song Medellin not added to Radio 1 playlist

Madonna has found herself in the centre of an ageism row after Radio 1 decided not to add her new song Medellin to its playlist.

Even though she’s teamed up with 25-year-old upcoming singer Maluma for the bangin’ track, punters are of the belief the move to add it only to Radio 2 was because Madge is now 60.

Not that you’d know it – she doesn’t look a day over 21 if we do say so ourselves.

Still, even though it’s a mere channel change to be able to listen to Madonna on Radio 2 social media was alight in fierce debate as they slammed the youth station for overlooking the superstar – arguing that aside from Madonna’s tunes still catering to Radio 1’s demographic, Maluma is 25 and not really in Radio 2’s range.

A source told The Sun: ‘It’s a sad reality that for some people in the music business it wouldn’t matter what Madonna released. They’d dismiss it because she’s 60.’

However, a BBC spokesman told Metro.co.uk in a statement: ‘Individual stations make their own decisions on the songs they play, based on what the audience expects to hear, with no other criteria taken into consideration.’

Fair dos. It should be noted it’s extremely rare for both Radio 1 and 2 to add the same songs to its playlist.

Despite this being the case, though, fans weren’t happy as they wondered why the stations couldn’t make an exception seeing as it’s Madonna, you know.

‘Why is @Madonna new song not on @BBCR1 playlist it is a dance and up beat song & back to best #radio1 says it has nothing to do with her age I say it has everything to do with her age and if she was a man I bet it would be played then,’ one very angry fan wrote on Twitter today.

Another added in similar uproar: ‘What is this I hear , Radio 1 not playing madonna’s new music ??? Bc their audience doesn’t want to hear it ?? Well I’m your audience and now Ima have to change the channneellll lads [sic].’

Others were more than happy to switch stations to get some Madame X in their ears.

The singer made a transformation into Madame X earlier this week, before launching the debut single in and around our senses.

The legend is set to release her 14th studio album Madame X on 14 June, following performances at the Billboard Awards and the Eurovision Song Contest.

The lead single Medellin is accompanied by a classic Madonna video, opening with the star praying in a chapel, before she goes all dominatrix diva – as well as riding horses and serving us cowgirl vibes.

Songs currently making waves on the Radio 1 playlist, which Madge would have gone up against, features Ariana Grande’s latest with Victoria Monét, Monopoly, Jonas Brother’s Sucker and Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy.
