Madonna Just Dropped A Wild, Carnivalesque Video Full Of Throwbacks For "Medellín"

Madonna dropped the music video for Medellín, the first single off her 14th album Madame X, last night, and it’s equal parts forward-looking and a throwback to some of the Queen of Pop’s greatest hits. The clip opens with a scene in which Madonna prays to God in an alcove that nods to the “Like A Prayer” video.

“How could I trust anyone after years of disappointment and betrayal? How could I not want to run away again and again? Escape. I will never be what society expects me to be. I’ve seen too much. I cannot turn back. I have been kidnapped, tortured, humiliated and abused. In the end I still have hope. I still believe in the goodness of humans.” The scene is a brief period of calm that ends quite suddenly with the line: “Madame X loves to dance because you can’t hit a moving target.”

From there on out, the video is a sort of wild Madonna-themed carnival. The 60-year-old has previously stated that this album is inspired by her current home of Lisbon, and she more than delivers when it comes to Latin flair. There’s cha-cha dancing and nods to gaucho culture and a lavish wedding to reggaetón star Maluma – not to mention a staggering number of references to other moments from her career. In the wedding scene alone, the dress is a clear nod to her Like A Virgin days, while the cowboy hat recalls her 2000 album Music. Madonna and Maluma will perform the catchy track together for the first time at the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, with the full album set to drop on June 14. Watch the video in full below, and start preparing yourself for the Madonna renaissance.
