Madonna has asked for her fans’ forgiveness after she was forced to cancel three shows on her current Madame X tour due to being in ‘overwhelming pain’.

The Material Girl star was set to take to the stage in Boston, Massachusetts, from 30 November to 2 December however she’s been told to step back, on doctor’s orders.

Taking to social media this week, the 61-year-old shared the update with punters, as she explained the unexpected cancellation was a ‘punishment’ for her.

‘Please forgive this unexpected turn of events,’ she wrote on Instagram on Wednesday night.

‘Doing my show every night brings me so much joy and to cancel is a kind of punishment for me, but the pain I’m in right now is overwhelming and I must rest and follow doctor’s orders so I can come back stronger and better and continue the Madame X journey with all of you.’

Unfortunately for fans who might have thought they can catch her in a postponed show, the performances, at the Boch Center Wang Theatre, won’t be rescheduled.

Live Nation confirmed the news, saying rescheduled dates weren’t possible ‘due to the tight scheduling through the balance of the year’, however refunds will be automatically issued to credit card holders.

The cancellations don’t affect remaining dates on the tour, with Madonna picking things back up on 7 December in Philadelphia.

The singer was recently forced to cancel Boston shows, and just days before she revealed she was taking her ‘usual Ice Bath for multiple injuries’ following a performance in Los Angeles.

Last month she also postponed a New York concert, blaming a knee injury.

A statement posted on her website read: ‘Unfortunately, Madonna’s Madame X concert this evening at BAM Howard Gilman Opera House is postponed.

‘Madonna is currently dealing with a knee injury and has been advised rest for the next three days to assist in her recovery. Fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets pending information on rescheduling.’

At the time the Queen of Pop posted on Instagram that she is ‘not a quitter’ and it is hard to admit to being a human made of flesh and blood.

She wrote: ‘Its Hard for Madame X to admit that she is also a human being made of flesh and blood and she must rest for the next 3 days to insure full recovery for her knee.

‘I am not a quitter. This hurts me more than you can imagine. Its time to take those heels and fishnets off for a few days!

‘Thank you for your understanding. See you very soon! [sic]’
