Made in Scotland Young Innovator winner is back in with a chance of another award

A former Young Innovator of the Year Award winner has been nominated in this year’s Insider Made In Scotland Awards .

Michael Harkins, who won the Young Innovator title in the 2017 Made In Scotland Awards, has been nominated for Turtle Pack, a flotation device for children.

Turtle Pack, with has a fun and eye-catching design and is worn on a child’s back so their arms are free, has been nominated in the 2019 Best Product category.

Designed as a fun thing for children to have and wear, the buoyancy of the swimming aid can be gradually reduced as a child’s confidence and coordination in the water starts to improve.

West Calder-based Harkins’ invention was inspired by his 10 years working as a swimming instructor after taking charge of swimming lessons for Livingston and District Dolphins Swimming Club.

Harkins said: “The key to attracting children to swim is to make sure that they have fun, and this is a product that does away with arm bands and floats to allow children to move freely through water whilst they’re learning to swim.

“It’s been developed carefully with parents and swimming instructors, and the time I’ve taken to carefully develop the product has paid off after gaining international interest in the product from retailers and distributors.”

Nominations for the Made In Scotland Awards 2019 held in partnership with the University of Strathclyde’ Advanced Forming Research Centre are still open.

This year’s awards will take place on May 9, 2019 at the Glasgow Science Centre. With over 200 guests attending it is an ideal opportunity to showcase some of the best and most innovative products and services to be designed and manufactured in Scotland by exhibiting at the event.
