Madam Secretary stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the Secretary of State for the United States Government, who later became the first female president of the United States. The final series wrapped up on Sunday, December 8 in the US and recently began airing on Sky Witness in the UK.

Why is Madam Secretary ending?

On May 15, 2019, CBS announced that season six of Madam Secretary would be the last.

Instead of the usual 23 episodes, the final series had a much shorter run of just 10 instalments.

The final season premiered on Sunday, October 6 on CBS, concluding earlier this week on Sunday, December 8.

CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl revealed the news back in May, explaining the show creators Barbara Hall and Lori McCreary would “tie up the storyline.”

According to TV Line, season five had a steady 0.4 rating and 4.8 million total viewers, which was the series second-smallest audience ever.

Madam Secretary season six concluded on Sunday, December 8 in the US and saw Elizabeth McCord settle into her role as President of the United States.

Tweeting ahead of the final episode, Madam Secretary star Téa Leoni wrote: “The last episode of #MadamSecretary airs tonight. My deepest thanks to everyone who watched our show, for your incredible generosity and enthusiasm, it has been an honour to make it for you. xoxtéa.”

Tim Daly who played Henry McCord in the show tweeted: “HUMANS!!! I am so grateful that you watched

@MadamSecretary for these many years. It was a grand adventure. I hope you laughed, learned, were moved, and mostly that you were entertained.

“For me, the years were marked by the best crew ever! I include the producers and actors as part of our crew. Our family. Thank you all SO much.”

Fans took to Twitter after the series finale to express their sadness that Madam Secretary was not returning to screens.

One fan said: “I don’t know how many times I have said it already BUT… here it comes again; this show and it’s fantastic cast will be so incredibly missed.

“We have shared tears and laughter with the characters episode for episode, season for season. This was one of the finest shows ever!”

A second fan commented: “I have seen every episode and commend the cast, crew, writers, director, producer, timely storylines and magnificent acting. Great job. Cried through the final episode. Wonderful to see so many of the original cast members back and to feel optimism about the future of all.”

A third fan tweeted: “For the past 6 years I have learned, laughed, cried, got scared, loved, dreamed, wondered what if. I felt as if I was losing friends each time a cast member left. You will all be so terribly missed! Here to praying there is a #madampresident in the future!”
