Luke Perry had eco-friendly burial in ‘mushroom suit’, daughter reveals

Actor Luke Perry was laid to rest in an eco-friendly “mushroom suit”, his daughter has said.

Sophie Perry, 18, revealed details of her father’s burial in an emotional Instagram post on Friday.

In a message shared with her 94.9k followers, the daughter of the former ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ star explained that her father had chosen an unusual mode of internment.

“Any explanation I give will not do justice to the genius that is the mushroom burial suit, but it is essentially an eco friendly burial option via mushrooms,” wrote Ms Perry, alongside a photo of fungi growing among the trees in California’s Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.

Luke Perry, 52, was buried in the Coeio’s biodegradable “mushroom suit” (Coeio)

“All I can say is that you should all look into them at coeio.com or just by googling ‘mushroom burial suit’.

“My dad discovered it, and was more excited by this than I have ever seen him. He was buried in this suit, one of his final wishes. They are truly a beautiful thing for this beautiful planet, and I want to share it with all of you.”

The mushroom suit, or ‘Infinity Burial Suit’, was developed by California-based green burial company Coeio.

Made from 100 per cent organic cotton embedded with material from specially cultivated mushrooms, the firm claims its biodegradable suit “delivers nutrients from body to surrounding plant roots efficiently”.

Founder Jae Rhim Lee wore an early version of the suit during a 2011 Ted Talk in which she explained her research.

“Some of our tastiest mushrooms can clean environmental toxins,” she said, “so I thought maybe I can train an army of toxin-cleaning edible mushrooms.”

The company promises to plant two trees for every suit it sells, adding that at a cost of £1,145 ($1,500), it’s “far” cheaper than traditional burials “which cost more than $5,000”.

In her Instagram post, Ms Perry explained that mushrooms now hold “an entirely new meaning for me”.

“In December I went to San Francisco with two of my best friends. One of them, had never never been to California, so we went to show him the Redwoods. I took this picture while we were there, because i thought, ‘damn, those mushrooms are beautiful’,” she wrote.

Many social media users have praised the 52-year-old actor’s burial method, claiming it has opened their eyes to alternatives to caskets and cremation.

“I never knew about this! Thank you for using this voice of yours to share these kinds of things. It is a bit ‘scary’ (in lack of a better word), yet so fascinating and important,” commented one Instagram user.

“What a beautiful way to keep life going. This brings a whole different level to resting in peace. Thank you for sharing such an intimate part of your life,” wrote another.

However, others have voiced their disgust at the infinity suit.

“Ridiculous! Don’t you know about dust to dust. Had you buried your father in a wooden casket, be assured, he would have been returned to the earth without paying $1,500 for a silly mushroom suit. A sucker is born everyday,” commented an Instagram critic.

“This is creepy, disgusting and disturbing. Imagine now using the mushrooms for a recipe like ‘risotto with funghi’,, mushrooms that have been feeding off a corpse,” added another.

Luke Perry died in California on March 4, days after suffering a massive stroke.
