Luke Evans singing voice: Is Luke Evans classically trained as a singer?

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight (Sunday, November 10) at 7:20pm on BBC One. Fans of actor Luke Evans may be surprised to see him singing on the results show but the A-list star has a lengthy musical theatre career behind him. Tonight, one more couple will say goodbye to their chances of lifting the glitterball trophy but before the bottom two is announced, Evans will perform his new single from his debut album, At Last.

Is Luke Evans a classically trained singer?

Luke Evans is best known for appearing on the big screen in major Hollywood films.

The Welsh actor most recently starred as Gaston in Disney’s live-action adaption of Beauty and the Beast.

He rose to worldwide stardom after playing Apollo in the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans.

However, tonight the actor is swapping the stage and big screen for the Strictly Come Dancing dance floor.

Evans will not be dancing, but he will be singing Bring Him Home from his debut album, At Last.

His debut album will be released on Friday, November 22.

In a statement, Evans said: ‘The album is a reimagining of very well-known tracks. So we were looking for tracks that we could strip right back down to the bare essentials and then add new arrangements.

“Turning an 80s pop anthem or power ballad into something more acoustic or intimate – but retaining the essence of the original.”

Fans of the actor may be shocked to know that Evans has been singing from a young age.

The star even received vocal training from a renowned vocal coach in Wales.

At age 17, Evans moved from his home in Aberbargoed, Wales to Cardiff where he studied under Louise Ryan.

Ryan coaches young singers and actors who aspire to have a stage career.

Whether Evans received only classical training is unknown but he received a range of vocal training to prepare him for his musical theatre career.

Ryan has worked with the likes of Charlotte Church and Lucie Jones to name a few.

Speaking to Wales Online, Evans said: “When I was growing up, I loved to sing.

“I used to be taught by Louise Ryan, Charlotte Church’s singing coach, which is why I wanted to go into musicals. And it was doing musicals like Taboo, the Boy George musical, where I learned to act.”

In 1997, he won a scholarship to London Studio Centre, graduating in 2000.

He then began his acting career on London’s West End, starring in musicals such as Rent, Miss Saigon and Piaf.

Speaking to Graham Norton on BBC Radio 2 ahead of his performance, Evans revealed he was feeling the pressure of performing on Strictly.

He said: “Yes! I am going to be doing Strictly. No pressure. It is a lot of pressure.

“It is a lot of pressure because it’s not just you, if the dancers get it right, that’s the take they’re using.“

Evans is also known for playing Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and Scott Hipwell in The Girl on The Train.

He starred as Dracula in the film Dracula Untold, starring opposite Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon and Charles Dance.

In 2017 he played American psychologist William Moulton Marston in the biographical drama Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

He recently appeared as a guest star on Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour and portrayed John Moore in The Alienist.

Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight at 7:20pm on BBC One
