Luis Suarez appeals for handball against Chile goalkeeper in bizarre Copa America moment

Uruguay took on Chile in their final group stage game as both unbeaten teams fought to finish top of Group C.

Chile only needed a draw to come on top to set up a showdown with Peru and avoid facing Colombia after Uruguay drew with Japan.

Luis Suarez came into the third match of the tournament having scored against both Ecuador and Japan and the ever-fierce Barcelona striker had fans in stitches in the first half against Chile.

As Suarez looked to round Gabriel Arias in goal, the keeper’s outstretched left arm prevented the forward from squaring to a team-mate on the edge of the six-yard box.

And in a forgetful moment, Suarez immediately appeared for handball as it struck Arias, only then to realise his error and put both hands on his head.

One fan said on Twitter: “Hahaha his natural nature.”

“He is unbelievable omg,” responded another.

One wrote: “Hahaha force of habit.”

“Dude covered it up by then putting his hands over his head. classic luisito,” laughed another.

Suarez is renowned for pushing the boundaries on the pitch having been a contentious figure with Liverpool and Barcelona over the last seven years in particular.

The South American even managed to rile his former fans when Barca took on Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals as the 32-year-old got embroiled in spats with several Reds stars and was roundly booed in the second leg at Anfield.

Barca’s season ended disappointingly as they threw away a 3-0 lead from the first leg, losing 4-0 in the return tie as Liverpool went on to win the competition.

The Catalan giants then lost the Copa del Rey final to Valencia, which Suarez missed after opting to undergo surgery on a knee injury.

But now fully fit, Suarez will hope to lead Uruguay to glory for the second time after scoring four times as La Celeste won the Copa America back in 2011.

His hopes of doing so were dealt a huge boost as Oscar Tabarez’s side beat Chile 1-0 thanks to Edinson Cavani’s late header.

Uruguay will now take on Peru on Saturday night (8pm UK time).

Should they win that match, they will then face the winner of the quarter-final between Colombia and Chile in Porto Alegre on July 3.
