Lucas Torreira is unhappy with Unai Emery for changing his role in the Arsenal side, according to the Uruguay international’s agent.

The former Sampadoria impressed last season and his combative style helped establish him as a firm favourite with his new fans.

Torreira won man of the match awards against Liverpool and Tottenham when deployed at the base of midfield with Arsenal finally appearing to have found the defensive screen they had been lacking for so long.

Emery, however, was reported to have wanted former Stoke City star Steven Nzonzi ahead of Torreira and this season has stationed the 23-year-old in a more attacking position, much to the player’s dismay.

‘Anything is possible in football,’ his agent Raffaele Bentancur told Radio Marte. ‘Torreira is happy at Arsenal, although the change in role has not made him happy.

‘It must be said that this year the whole team is not doing well. But I believe Arsenal wants to keep him.’

Torreira came close to Napoli in the summer of 2018 but the the Serie A club were gazumped by Arsenal’s £26million offers.

Napoli, along with Milan, are monitoring Torreira’s situation carefully ahead of the January window with a view to making an offer that could tempt Arsenal into selling.

‘It is true, Napoli wanted him, but there was economic distance between their offer and Arsenal’s,’ Bentacur added.

‘Carlo Ancelotti personally tried to take him to Naples and if talks with Arsenal had broken down, he would’ve gone to Napoli. However Arsenal was his choice, English football was more suited to his skills.”

‘Torreira felt bad about missing out on the move to Naples. Why? Because he is Uruguayan, and because he wants to close his career at Boca Juniors, and Napoli is very similar in atmosphere to Boca.’
