Unsettled Arsenal star Lucas Torreira could leave in January with Napoli set to reignite their interest in the Uruguay international.

The combative midfielder almost joined the Serie A club from Sampdoria ahead of the 2018 World Cup but opted to sign for Arsenal in a £26million deal.

Torreira impressed during the early months of his career in north London but has steadily slipped down Unai Emery’s pecking order and has been stationed in a more advanced position this season, rather than his customary defensive midfield role.

‘I don’t know whether I’d say it’s frustrating,’ Torreira told reporters recently about his recent demotion.

‘All players want to play, they obviously want to be in the starting XI – that’s completely normal. But that’s not something that depends on me. It’s down to the coach to make those decisions and really I have to respect that. Right now it’s about not giving up.

‘You have to continue working hard and whether I’m playing in the starting XI or from the bench I want to give my all for the team. That’s the kind of player I am. I like to give 100 per cent for the shirt to help my teammates and to give the fans something to cheer about.’

Torreira has started both Premier League matches since Granit Xhaka clashed with his own fans and lost the captaincy, but Gazzetta dello Sport claims the 23-year-old, who has also been heavily linked with a move to Milan, is keen on a return to Italy.

Arsenal are minded to keep Torreira, at least until the end of the season, but Napoli, who are enduring an equally tumultuous campaign, are planning some significant squad changes and view the midfielder as a potential replacement for Allan.

Gazzetta claims talks between Arsenal head of football Raul Sanllehi, Napoli cheifs and Torreira’s agent, Pablo Betancur, are due to take place imminently.
