Loyle Carner has said that his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has positively impacted how he makes music – but it also has serious downsides.

The 24-year-old, who received a Mercury nomination for his debut album Yesterday’s Gone, is set to release his second album Not Waving But Drowning.

When asked if his genre is ‘ADHD made sound’, the hip hop artist from London agreed but admitted that it can make feedback difficult to receive.

He told the Independent: ‘Like I say on the album, “ADHD is the best and the worst of me”.

‘It means I can make this music, but I’m also incredibly sensitive to the criticism.’

The artist shared that he has considered throwing in the towel because of harsh words from trolls.

‘I try not to look at social media because if people tell me a song about my mum is shit I take that personally. I still feel like quitting when somebody attacks me,’ he explained.

He went on to describe his diagnosis as having extraordinary powers fit for a ‘cool’ Marvel movie.

‘It’s like a superpower. It’s hard to handle. Think of Cyclops in X-Men – the one with the laser vision? He can’t walk around normally without his glasses,’ he said.

‘Even his girlfriend can’t look in his eyes and that sucks.’

He added: ‘But, when you need him to do it then he can zap a building in half so… that’s cool.’

The musician, who also lives with dyslexia, previously told Metro.co.uk that he hoped to use he is hoping to use his platform to discuss mental health.

‘I’m heavily into mental heath. I’ve got ADHD myself. I’m dyslexic. So to be a writer and dyslexic is unheard of,’ he told us.

‘I guess it’s just about showing that if you want to do it, you can do it. I’ve got ADHD. I’m loud and annoying. I work hard. If you got ADHD you can also do anything.’
