Love Island’s Jamie and Camilla talk us through their new sustainable beauty range

Loved up couple Camilla Thurlow and Jamie Jewitt, the standout stars of Love Island 2017, have launched their own sustainable natural beauty range, Love Jamila

And, no, it’s not just a cheesy play on their names, as ‘jameela’ means deep inner beauty in Arabic, they explain, which is a nod to the brand’s ethos of beauty inside and out.

The cruelty-free range is made of 100 per cent natural ingredients and all comes in eco-friendly cute miniature jam jar packaging in keeping with the couple’s strong interest in climate change and the environment.

Love Jamila features a sugar lip scrub, multi-balm and eye cream

“Times have changed and we’ve recently discovered as consumers a lot of the damage we have caused the planet through bad business and living practises most notably our oceans. Use of plastic is one of the key issues. One thing we found incredibly frustrating though is that the responsibility is being deflected, in large part, onto the consumer to make better choices,” Jamie and Camilla tell the Standard over email.

“Whilst we see it as very important for the consumer to be mindful, we believe the bulk of the responsibility should be on the large companies to no longer make plastic so readily available as cheap plastic = larger profit margins. We are leading by putting every effort into avoiding plastic at all costs as a company, and as our product list grows we will find new and innovative ways to package avoiding the need for plastic whilst reducing waste materials altogether. If we can do it as a start-up with limited resources we know the big guys can and should be too!”

There’s a charitable element to the brand, too, with 10 per cent of turnover going to the charity Help Refugees, which works with local organisations on Samos, a Greek island which has received a high number of people from war-torn and conflict-ridden countries in recent years.

Donations made through sales will be used to support the provision of a “safe space” for women on the island where they can enjoy things like yoga, dance and breathing classes, creative workshops, as well as mother and baby sessions.

Here, Jamie and Camilla talk us through the products.

Camjam multibalm

“We created Camjam Multibalm first as we were really keen to launch an effective multipurpose product that has a number of uses. The peach kernel oil is lovely and light, so it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. It leaves a delicate sheen on lips, as well as being lovely and moisturising for anywhere you need it,” Camilla says.

The balm (£9) contains nourishing shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba wax and avocado butter.

“Like Jamie, I get very dry lips, so it’s perfect for moisturising them after a little scrub with Sweet Talk. Also, it has very special memories as it was the very first product we developed, and gave us the initial idea for the miniature jam jar packaging.”

Sweet Talk Sugar Lip Scrub

Meanwhile the Sweet Talk Sugar Lip Scrub (£9) contains peppermint oil, vitamin E, jojoba oil and almond oil.

“We absolutely love the inclusion of peppermint in the Sweet Talk Sugar Lip Scrub, it took us a long time to get it just right and now that we have, it’s good enough to eat!”

“I’m always dipping into the Sweet Talk Sugar Scrub as it is incredibly effective at gently scrubbing away dry skin, leaving your lips feeling smooth and tasting delicious,” Jamie adds.

Easy on the Eye avocado eye cream

The third product, the Easy on the Eye avocado eye cream (£9), is made of avocado oil, aloe vera, argan oil, green tea extract and, our old friend, hyaluronic acid – and we have to admit it is feels ultra soothing and cooling on puffy eyes.

“We always wanted to include avocado in the eye cream as it’s gentle enough to moisturise such a delicate area – and obviously we couldn’t avoid the nod to my avocado birthday breakfast for Cam,” Jamie says.

Love Jamila rapeseed wax and botanical oils

The range also features two vegan travel candles made of rapeseed wax and botanical oils. Library, is made of cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon and frankincense, while Serendipity is crafted with ylang ylang, neroli, juniper and patchouli (both £18).

“Blending essential oils is like alchemy, and you hardly ever know exactly how it will turn out, so we had several iterations during the first phase of development for Serendipity and Library, that one of us would love and the other would hate – maybe we’ll bring out a Jamie and a Cam candle and see which one people like, we love a bit of competition!

“We have lots of new body products in the pipeline, Cam loves bath time!”
