Love Island’s resident comedian and voiceover guy, AKA Iain Stirling, revealed that his jokes have at times toed the line of being too mean – and he’s been told off for it.

The show’s boisterous narrator has been told ‘you can’t say that’ by Love Island bosses after he presented them with a couple of rather mean jokes about contestants in the past.

Iain, 31, talked about his axed jokes, and the upcoming series five of the reality show on Sunday Brunch.

He said: ‘Some of them they let us do – and some they say: “You obviously can’t say that.”’

Iain and his mate and fellow comedian Matt Forde, who come up with the jokes together are both Scottish, and have managed to slip in a few Scots witticisms, though execs didn’t understand them.

‘We get some Scottish phrases in,’ he stated. ‘London TV execs are like, “Oh, what a quaint phrase” [and] I’m like “That doesn’t mean that”.’

So does it work? Does he have a team of writers to help him come up with zingy jokes?

‘I have a team of writers,’ he began, laughing. ‘His name’s Mark. He’s a good friend of mine. Also Scottish.’

Iain admitted that he’s also recognised for his distinctive voice, saying that it tends to happen at the most inopportune times.

‘It’s sort of weird, isn’t it? Because people do recognise the voice…but definitely sometimes when I say “I do this show called Love Island” the penny drops.

‘I definitely have things like, I’m on the phone to the bank and they’re like, “Are you from Love Island?”’

He also revealed that he had initially said ‘no’ to taking on the Love Island gig ‘loads of times.’

‘Basically, I said “no” loads of times, cos I don’t really watch – I’m not a reality TV guy really, and then it films June/July, which is so silly when you’re a comedian…just before the Edinburgh Fringe Festival so I want to make sure the show for the festival is really good.’

Despite initially being hesitant, he loves his job and thinks it’s ‘great.’

Iain and the Sunday Brunch hosts went on to talk about how ‘addictive’ the show was, and Iain insisted that watching the show, which spans across two months, is ‘not a waste of your life.’

‘That’s the great thing about it – you can see it from a psychological thing…there’s loads of things you can take away from it.’

Good to know, thanks Iain!

The comedian is currently dating Laura Whitmore, and the Irish television presenter said she misses her beau whenever he’s in Spain filming Love Island for eight weeks.

‘I’m a massive fan [of Love Island]. He’s [Iain Stirling] there in Mallorca for eight weeks – I don’t understand why he has to be there,’ she said.

‘Could he not do it from a studio in London? But apparently he has to be there!’
