It was the catchphrase that grated on the nation.

But Curtis Pritchard couldn’t help but wheel out the phrase ‘young lady’ yet again on the Love Island reunion episode on Sunday night, as he endured an awkward chat with his ex Amy Hart.

Sat between her and current flame Maura Higgins – who he came in fourth place with in last week’s finale – Curtis turned to Amy and said ”

This was met with an eye-roll from the feisty blonde, who had been sensationally dumped out of the blue by Curtis during the series, prompting her to leave the villa devastated.

After using what has unfortunately become his trademark phrase again, Amy mocked him by repeating it under her breath, scoffingly.

Fans noticed this and took to Twitter to share their feelings about hearing the ‘cringe’ and ‘patronising’ phrase again.

‘Amy laughing at Curtis calling her “young lady” has been me for the entire series,’ one person tweeted.

Fans had already taken to social media across the series to express their irritation with Curtis’ ‘creepy’ phrase, with many likening him to ‘an 80-year-old granddad’ or a ’40-year-old teacher’.

Curtis left Amy broken-hearted after he cruelly dumped her following his short stint in the Casa Amor villa, and the pair of them and Maura looked like they’d rather be anywhere else during the live broadcast on Sunday.

Adding insult to injury, Curtis awkwardly admitted that he still would have dumped Amy if Casa Amor hadn’t happened.

However, the TV star left the islanders wriggling with embarrassment when she asked Curtis whether he would have ditched Amy.

As Amy looked on, there was a seriously long silence as the ballroom dancer carefully pondered his answer.

He then admitted that he would have in fact ended his relationship with Amy regardless, stating that their romance wasn’t ‘100% right’.

He continued: ‘It would have ended up happening anyway I think.’

When asked if she had anything to say to Amy, Maura replied: ‘I’m not gonna lie, it is awkward.’

But she went on to say that she and Amy left on good terms and hoped they could be friends, adding that ‘the past is the past.’

Dancer Curtis addressed Amy for the first time since she left the villa, where he once again opened up about breaking her heart.

Speaking to his ex, who looked sensational in a black, lace strapless gown, he said: ‘It was a hard time, it was not the best thing that ever happened but hopefully we can be friends, I would like to be friends in the future.’

While Amy replied that she just wanted him to be happy, adding that was the reason she left.

Viewers watching at home were quick to comment on Twitter about the cringe scenario, with many commenting on how awkward the reunion was.

‘Making amy, Curtis and maura sit together is the most awkward thing eskkkkk,’ wrote one viewer.

‘The whole Curtis and Maura thing with Amy was just unbearably awkward. #LoveIsIandReunion #LoveIsland,’ tweeted a third.

With another adding: ‘This is the most painfully awkward thing I’ve ever witnessed. Why put Amy through that? #LoveIslandReunion.’

Despite the harsh words from her ex, Amy appeared in high spirits as she later left the studio following the Love Island Aftersun wrap party.

Looking glamorous with her sexy new haircut, the blonde giggled away as she made her departure alongside fellow Islanders including Jourdan Riane and her boyfriend Danny Williams.

Amy was clearly putting her love life woes firmly behind her as she beamed and waved to fans following an eventful night.

Meanwhile, Curtis and Maura continued to put on a united display as they exited the building following the bash.

The lovebirds, who recently consummated their relationship, shared a kiss in the back of their car as they were watched by adoring fans.

Clearly relieved to be away from the awkwardness that was their joint interview with Amy, the duo were all smiles at the end of the evening.

The following morning, Curtis appeared solo on Lorraine.

Asked if it was awkward to see villa ex Amy on the runion show, Curtis said: ‘I rang Amy on Saturday [before the show], I spoke to her already which was really nice. We had a great conversation, a quick conversation, how she’s doing, how I’m doing… I’ve got a lot of respect for Amy, she’s great, she’s amazing.

‘It was fractionally awkward to start with, I felt, I hadn’t seen her properly yet and I did have feelings for her. It was good. Later on in the after party it was nice, we got along really well.’

Of having a long-distance relationship, Curtis said: ‘Maura’s hoping to move to England, either London or Manchester, she doesn’t know just yet. But Ireland’s so close, so easy to get to. So we can literally travel back and forwards. I work a lot in Ireland anyway.

‘Maura’s family have welcomed me into their homes, so I’d never have to stay in a hotel.’

He added: ‘I have noticed since I came out [of the villa], I’ve got so much closer to Maura.’

Speaking of being able to go for walks and spend time away from the cameras he said: ‘Since I’ve done all these things with Maura I’ve just got closer and closer. I was in bed on my own and I was like, ‘Oh, something’s missing here, this is really weird’. In the villa we’re always together.’

Asked about an interview in which he discussed the future and what that meant for Maura he said: ‘Basically, I’m happy with Maura. I’m happy with how things are going with Maura and I can see a future with Maura. We’ve both said the same thing sort of. That’s that really. Maura’s head is clear and my head is clear on where we’re going. But I think the future is an unwritten path sometimes and you don’t know. Like last year, would I have ever said I’d have been on Love Island? No, never.’

Of being out of the villa he said: ‘It’s a whirlwind. I’m just taking it in my stride, really. It’s amazing to come out and have all these opportunities thrown at you.’

But he warned himself and the other couples: ‘Make sure you put time aside for your relationship. Everyone’s getting so much stuff thrown at them. If you’re not careful you’re going to go separate ways.’

Love Island returns for a winter version early next year.
