Love Island star Sophie Piper has been called out on Instagram for seemingly travelling to the Maldives during a national lockdown.

England is currently in lockdown, with tight restrictions in place requiring people to stay at home in a bid to control the rising cases of coronavirus across the country.

International travel is prohibited unless given a legally permitted reason to do so, such as work. It’s not clear the reasons behind Sophie’s trip, but she was seen posting idyllic snaps from her exotic getaway to her social media page.

Her recent post sees her posing in swimwear at the edge of a pool right by the sea, while another of a dreamy sunset tagged her location as the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives.

On seeing her snaps, followers questioned how Sophie had managed to travel, while others called her out for holidaying during an ongoing pandemic.

‘I really didn’t think Sophie would be one of the idiot influencers going on holiday now 😩,’ posted one user, while another quizzed: ‘How are you able to travel???’

One more vented: ‘Another idiot influencer traveling during a global pandemic claiming its work because it’s so hard to stay at home.’

Influencers heading overseas for work trips has left fans frustrated of late, with Love Island star Olivia Attwood calling out her fellow influencers for claiming they are ‘working’ while away and not holidaying.

She argued in a video shared to her Instagram story: ‘There’s a difference between being able to earn money from wherever you are and being on holiday for work. Whenever I go on holiday, I will post content which I can monetise, but I’m still on holiday.’

‘I don’t go, “Oh me and [my boyfriend] Brad have had the most amazing week in Portugal, but don’t worry, I was flat out working,” you just sound so stupid,’ Olivia said.

It’s not known exactly when Sophie flew out to the Maldives – however, prior to lockdown coming into place on January 7, London and the South East were placed into tier four, where international travel was still prohibited.

Sophie – who is the younger sister of presenter Rochelle Humes – hasn’t yet addressed the backlash.

She shot to fame on the first ever winter series of Love Island that aired on ITV2 from South Africa last year. She was dumped from the villa on day 22, with Paige Turley and Finley Tapp going on to win the series.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Sophie’s rep for comment.
