Love Island Paige and Finn talk heartbreak of being told about Caroline Flack's death

Love Island winners Paige Turley and Finn Tapp are riding on a high after being crowned the champs of the first ever winter series and taking home £25,000 each.

But the reality starlets took time to remember former host Caroline Flack, who tragically took her own life aged 40, just a week before the grand finale.

Viewers wondered whether the islanders, who usually receive no news from the outside world, would be told about it, given Caroline’s close links with the show.

And footballer Finn has now explained they were given the heads up about Caroline’s death shortly before the finale.

He said: “We were told just before the final. They wanted to tell us at the best time and the best way and we’re thankful that they did that.

“We remember her fondly. We loved her as a fan watching it on telly over the past few series, that’s the relationship we had with her.”

Finn’s girlfriend Paige added to The Sun: “Everybody knew how much she loved Love Island. It’s such a sensitive subject, we just send love to Caroline’s family.”

After Caroline’s death, two episodes of Love Island – one of Unseen Bits and another regular episode – were dropped from schedules, before it returned with a tribute from her friend and co-star Iain Stirling.

Sunday night’s finale also included a touching tribute, led by new host Laura Whitmore, as well as a montage of Caroline’s best bits – including her iconic slow motion walk ons.

Bravely fighting back tears, Laura said: “The past week has been extremely difficult, coming to terms with the loss of our friend and colleague, Caroline.

“We’re thinking of her family and everyone who knew her at this time.

“Caroline loved Love Island, she loved love and that’s why tonight’s final is dedicated to her.”

She also confirmed that Love Island would be back in the summer.
