Britain is set to have the first Christmas election in almost 100 years – but Love Actually fans think otherwise.
Boris Johnson won support for a 12 December election in his bid to finally bring Britain out of the EU at the start of the new year.
It’s a historic moment that’s put the country in a spin, with the poll set to take place just two weeks before we all sit down with friends and family for Christmas lunch.
The last December election the UK had was back in 1923, some 96 years ago.
But, if you’re a fan of Christmas classic rom-com Love Actually, then you’ll know the last time the country flocked to the polls was in 2003.
Fictionally, of course.
In Richard Curtis’ festive feel-good movie, David (played by Hugh Grant) was elected Prime Minister in a mid-November general election.
The realisation came about when one Twitter user asked the masses: ‘Politics nerds, when was the last time we had a UK election very close to Christmas?’
Sure enough, one Love Actually fan shared a photo of David waving to the nation from outside number 10 Downing Street, with the caption: ‘2003 xx.’
Agreeing with this, one Twitter user stated confidently: ‘Afraid the election took place in November in Love Actually.’
In reference to Prime Minister David, one follower quipped: ‘D’you suppose he’s available?’
Another replied in response: ‘He’d be better, by the looks of things. Would have to stop hitting on the staff though.’
Some supported the hashtag #HughGrantforPM, while others admitted they’d absolutely vote for Hugh aka David.
Honestly, if there’s any prime minister we want to see awkwardly dad dancing around Downing Street, it’s Hugh.
Supermarket Sweep host Rylan Clark-Neal made it clear whom he’s backing in the election, and joked: ‘I know who I’m voting for #GeneralElection #GE2019 #GE19,’ alongside a photo of PM Dave.
And another called for Bill Nighy’s iconic festive song from the movie be released again, writing: ‘Well, I’m hoping Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) releases Christmas is All Around. #Election2019.’
We are here for it all.
In another bizarre turn of events, Love Actually star Olivia Olson (the young girl who sang Mariah Carey) was also back on our screens this week with her appearance on X Factor: Celebrity, so it really is happening people.
What a time to be alive.
