Louise Minchin: BBC Breakfast host apologises as she calls out fan forced to 'switch off'

BBC Breakfast star Louise Minchin, 51, tends to always share a selfie shot alongside her co-host Dan Walker, 43, ahead of the morning programme. But the broadcaster issued an apology after sharing the photo two hours after the programme aired.

In view of her 179,000 Twitter followers, Louise shared a snap of herself smiling into the camera as her colleague Dan sat at a distance.

She captioned the post: “Sorry to be late with my good morning! Good morning from us here on @BBCBreakfast.”

While many fans inundated Louise with positive messages, one particular viewer took aim at the TV anchor.

In the snap, Louise could be seen sporting her signature style with her blond tresses falling loose but was not wearing her reading glasses.

The small-screen star tends to put her glasses on when she reads out the newspaper headlines.

The person in question wrote: “That’s the Louise I want to see. Sorry, but as soon as you put your glasses on and adopt your ‘Panorama’ face I have to switch off.

“Too much for early morning TV. I know it’s important to hold those in charge to account, but give us a chance to wake up first.”

Louise hit back at the viewer as she insisted her glasses were necessary otherwise she “cannot see” without them.

The BBC Breakfast host replied: “It is not something I can do anything about. I cannot see without them.”

Other fans jumped to Louise’s defence, as one person said: “What a strange comment, I’ve just recently started wearing glasses and have never given it a second thought. Louise always looks good.”

Another person commented: “I like them, gives you an air of authority.”

While a third person added: “I can’t believe you even bothered to respond to that Louise. I feel so grateful that you guys are putting yourselves on the line for us. Such uplifting items you’ve had on this week, it’s been a respite in these awful times. Thank you.”

Meanwhile, Louise also revealed her “favourite moment” on BBC Breakfast after she and Dan chatted with coronavirus survivor Hylton Murray-Phillipson on the programme yesterday.

Hylton was discussing what life was like for him after contracting coronavirus and having to spend his birthday in hospital.

The BBC guest explained: “In the afternoon, all the nurses gathered around my bed because I was exhausted having been sitting up for three hours,

“And they used a piece of cake and a candle on top and they sang Happy Birthday.”
