Louis Theroux has revealed that Joe Exotic would ‘rant’ about Carole Baskin behind-the-scenes as they filmed his BBC documentary.

The journalist met and interviewed the larger than life character back in 2011 for Louis Theroux Dangerous Pets and has claimed that the former zoo owner would share his conspiracy theories surrounding Carole and the disappearance of her first husband Don Lewis, who went missing in 1997.

‘Joe’s grudge against Carole preoccupied him when we filmed,’ Louis penned in The Times On Sunday as he finally shared his thoughts on the bingeworthy seven-part true-crime series.

‘He would rant about her, mentioning his belief that she’d had one of her husbands killed.’

Former big cat zoo keeper Joe – whose real name is Joseph Maldanado-Passage – was the main star of the now-viral Netflix documentary The Tiger King, which ended with him behind bars on various accounts of animal abuse and the murder-for-hire of Carole, who ran rival business Big Cat Sanctuary.

In a new interview following the success of the series, Joe has spoken out against his old foe, declaring their feud officially over. He’s currently serving a jail sentence after being found guilty of trying to kill her.

‘I’m done with the Carole Baskin saga,’ he revealed. ‘It’s now time to turn the tables and Joe get out of jail a free man and exonerated from all these charges.’

On being asked what has changed since his incarceration, Joe pleaded with viewers to ‘go sit with your animals for a week.’

‘I mean, when I left the zoo and sent my chimpanzees to the sanctuary in Florida and imagined what my chimpanzees went through for 18 years,’ he explained. ‘I’m ashamed of myself.’

Louis Theroux Dangerous Pets is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix while The Tiger King is available to stream on Netflix.
