Lorraine Kelly voices coronavirus fears about visiting elderly mum and dad

Lorraine Kelly has voiced the fears of many people as the UK faces months of disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The TV host was speaking out about her worries for her elderly mum and dad, who are considered high-risk because of their age.

Lorraine’s concerns come on the back of the revelation at the weekend that people over the age of 70 will be instructed to self-isolate for an extended period, regardless of whether they have displayed symptoms of COVID-19 or not.

The policy is set to be introduced in the next few weeks, as efforts to tackle the potentially deadly bug are ramped up, and, according to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, will last for a “very long time”.

But this is leading to widespread concern about the wellbeing of family members and contacts who are in this age group.

Lorraine appeared on Good Morning Britain this morning to tell hosts Piers Morgan and Susannah Reid about her worries, and said she was “soldiering on” like the rest of us.

But she added: “You know im quite a stoic, it takes a lot to get me nonplussed, but I’ve had a few wibbles and do you know what I’m really worried about? My mum and dad, because I don’t know is it better for me not to go and see them? Because my dad is really high risk, particularly my dad.”

But TV medical expert Dr Hilary had some words to calm anyone who is worried about visiting friends and family at this time, as he’s going through a similar situation with his 93-year-old mum.

He said: “I’m visiting my mum, she’s 93, she’s had respiratory problems in past, of course ll visit her, so will my brother’s but if we’ve got symptoms, we won’t.”

A total of 153 patients have now been diagnosed with  Coronavirus  in Scotland – after 32 new cases were confirmed yesterday.

Scotland is not planning on isolating over-70s, the country’s Health Secretary has said, amid criticism of the UK Government’s communication and strategy.

Jeane Freeman, Matt Hancock’s counterpart in Scotland, said the  Scottish Government  were not planning on isolating the elderly but would instead be “asking them to reduce social contact”.

A Scottish Government update is expected this morning.
