'Look how Camilla and Fergie were treated!' Piers Morgan rages in debate on Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step back from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family has sparked heated debates over accusations of racism in the British media. Piers Morgan got into a furious row with his guests on Good Morning Britain over whether the Duchess of Sussex has been subjected to discriminatory coverage. The ITV host accused critics of “cherry-picking” evidence, while his guests shot back that coverage for women of colour is more likely to be “negative”.

Responding to accusations that the coverage of Kate and Meghan has been noticeably different, Mr Morgan pointed to other women in the Royal Family who have received “negative coverage”.

He said: “There are plenty of royal women: Camilla Parker-Bowles, Princess Diana when she was alive, the Duchess of York Fergie.

“They’ve had ten times the negative coverage and intrusion, because the rules were very different then, than Meghan Markle has had, and they are white.

“I don’t see anybody drawing that parallel.”

Economics commentator Grace Blakeley did not agree, citing academic studies that showed evidence of a difference in “tone of coverage” for women of colour.

She told the ITV host: “You have to be able to look at these things across a broad range of coverage of various different issues.

“They do this in academic studies, where they look at the tone of coverage of various different people.

“We know already that if you are a woman of colour, particularly an MP who is a woman of colour, then you will have more negative coverage, and it’s definitely the case with Meghan Markle.”

The Queen’s statement read: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.

“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.

“These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
