Lonely Planet reveals its top 10 European destinations for 2019

Just in time for summer, travel site Lonely Planet have revealed its ‘Best in Europe’ list for 2019.

The list, which determines the destinations that ought to be on traveller’s radars, has been composed by a number of travel experts and consists of remote coastlines, vibrant cities and off-the-beaten-track regions.

High Tatras in Slovakia was awarded the top spot, being named as Europe’s number one destination for summer 2019 for its rugged, ethereal landscapes and distinct wild life – this is one of the only parts in Europe where you can see brown bears in the wild.

Spanish capital Madrid took the second spot for its street food offerings and cocktail joints, while the newly-founded Arctic Coast Way in Iceland came in third for the road connecting 21 villages and four islands in Iceland’s north – a must-do summer road trip.

The UK also features on the top 10 places to visit this summer with the Shetland Islands, our northernmost point, coming in at number six. The islands were praised for being an ‘enchanting archipelago’ for the ‘hardiest of adventurers’. The islands can only be reached by plane or overnight ferry from Aberdeen, but once there expect a number of stunning coastal trails, beaches and delicious fish and chips shops.

You can see the complete top 10 below.
