London theatre: School teacher battles 'post-fact era' and blame culture in new play

The Lesson, created by Rosa French and Rasa Niurkaite, will debut at Kennington’s White Bear Theatre later this month; and introduces audiences to Dawn – a somewhat “unorthodox” science teacher.

Passionate about inspiring her students to be interested not just in school, but the world around them; the piece sees Dawn navigating her way through a school system that sees her methods as strange, and a society that wants her to conform.

She encourages her students to always seek the truth, but is soon made to realise that the truth doesn’t always matter.

The official synopsis teases: “This play explores the post-fact era we are living in.

“How damaging could our tendency of jumping to conclusions be, when it comes to placing blame?”

Speaking to Express.co.uk, rising star French – who plays Dawn – said: I’m excited because Dawn is a very engaging character.

“She’s very human – she gets over-excited, she rambles, she makes bad jokes.

“So hopefully people get very invested in her story.”

Niurkaite – who directs – added: “We’re from STIGMAcollective, based in London – this is our first written piece, after a run of Sebastian Majewski’s right/left with heels [sic].

“Keeping with STIGMAcollective’s aim of presenting difficult and conversation-starting subjects, A Lesson focusses on today’s post-truth mentality through the lens of one woman’s story.”

The Lesson is part of the August Festival of new work at the off-West End theatre, and plays for two nights only.

Theatregoers can catch the one-hour show on Tuesday, August 27; and Wednesday, August 28 from 8:30pm.

The festival also boasts a wealth of new work including This Play Will Solve Climate Change, Patricia Gets Ready (for a date with the man that used to hit her), Granny Grotbag Says Goodbye, Thank You And Goodnight and Collide.

Peggy & Bill, What Happens Next Will ____ Your ____, Baba’s War, January, Tomboy and All The Colours are also on offer.

STIGMAcollective will also revive right/left with heels at the Cockpit Theatre on November 6 and 7.

Tickets for A Lesson are on sale now. Book here.
