London Fashion Week has confirmed that the bob is back for 2020

Back in the 1920s the flapper-style bob dominated, and now, 100 years on, we’re seeing a return of the cult hairstyle.

That’s right, the bob is back for 2020.

It goes without saying that London Fashion Week is always a hotbed for trending new hairstyles and beauty looks and this year several guests and influencers were spotted with the chopped-off hairdo.

But no trend simply returns in its previous state. Instead it reinvents itself, staying true to its origins whilst offering something new and contemporary.

So there are some important things that make the 2020 bob different from previous looks. We’ve asked some of the best in the hair business to share their thoughts on how to achieve the updated style.

Hair stylist Krysia West – who worked at fashion week on the Vin and Omi and Richard Phillipart shows, as part of the Aveda team – tells Metro.co.uk, ‘2020 sees the bob a bit reinvented and leaning towards a more classic finish with softer cuts which nicely compliment the current softer tones we are noticing in hair colour at the moment too.’

But celebrity hairstylist Bernardo Vasconcelos says a straight cut also works well, as long as it doesn’t look polished.

He says, ‘The 2020 cut is a medium-length straight cut with a middle parting for a more natural look. It also has texture and an effortless finish (rather than the super high maintenance version from the 90s).’

It seems there are a few versions of the 2020 bob, which makes sense when we remember there are different types of hair.

Bobs with flicked out ends, a long bob (the lob) with razor sharp ends and a sharp-edged bob cut just below the cheekbone were all versions spotted at London Fashion Week.

Another way to update the classic style is to throw in some of this season’s popular hair accessories, such as some resin hair slides or an Alice band.

But why is the bob such as timeless style?

Hair stylist Jonathan Andrew, who works for Fudge Professional, puts it down to the fact that it’s a versatile hairstyle that can be tailored to suit anyone, at any age.

He says, ‘Bobs are iconic, with notable names throughout history experimenting them to great success. Anna Wintour and Victoria Beckham are perhaps the most notable wearers of bobs in recent decades.’

Jonathan also think the low maintenance nature of a bob makes it an incredibly popular option.

He adds, ‘The other great thing about bobs is that they’re practical, and don’t take too much time to style. There are loads of way you can switch things up: opt for a perfect center parting like Kim Kardashian, or go through strands with a tong, and flip around the parting for a softer look. It just takes five minutes.’

However, Jonathan does warn that while the bob is a timeless hairstyle, it doesn’t suit everyone.

He says, ‘My advice is to visit your hairdresser with an idea of the length, texture, weight and sleekness of bob you’re after, but be open to what your stylist thinks too.’

You don’t want a Fleabag moment, after all.
