Logie Awards facing huge shake-up for 2020 ceremony after Tom Gleeson's controversial win

‘We get feedback every year from the networks’: Logie Awards facing huge shake-up for 2020 ceremony …after Tom Gleeson’s controversial win

The annual TV Week Logie Awards is set for a huge shake-up this year.

Ahead of the 2020 ceremony, TV Week editor Thomas Woodgate has revealed that the voting system will now be simplified, and ratings will be taken into account.

It comes after Tom Gleeson’s controversial Gold Logie win last year led to a backlash from both viewers and celebrities, following a shameless media campaign.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Woodgate said that he is revamping this year’s awards show following ‘feedback’ from television networks.

He explained that voting for the Most Popular awards, including the Gold Logie, will now run for five weeks in ‘one extended live period’ after nominees are announced.

The editor added that ‘all networks are invited to submit just five candidates for each of the 12 Most Popular Awards, including the Gold Logie Award.’

Previously, voting was split into two periods, and networks could submit as many candidates as they wanted for the Most Popular categories.

Television ratings will also be taken into account for the first time this year.

‘By using ratings we can now determine what is considered popular these days,’ added Mr Woodgate.

In recent years, the Logies has baffled fans after Married At First Sight, Australia’s highest rated reality show, has failed to win a single award.

In 2019, the Logies faced backlash over Hard Quiz host Tom Gleeson’s Gold Logie win, after slamming all the other nominees in a ruthless media campaign.

Mr Woodgate denied that this year’s revamp was because of the backlash.
