Lockdown rules change tomorrow allowing first travel across Britain in months

Lockdown rules will change on Monday allowing people the freedom to travel across the different parts of Britain for the first time in months.

Scotland will open its borders to holidaymakers from England and Wales on Monday, April 26 as restrictions begin to ease.

Each UK nation has operated under different lockdown rules during the pandemic, meaning many Brits have been prevented from seeing friends and family for months.

Even as the stay-at-home order was relaxed last month, people in England were still prevented from visiting loved ones in Wales and Scotland.

But as the vaccine rollout continues apace and the virus begins to recede, the restrictions on travel have started to change.

Here is what you need to know about travel within the UK.

You can go to Scotland from Monday

People living in England and Wales can travel to Scotland from Monday, April 26 to visit friends and family.

Holidaymakers can also travel north of the border for a break with their household, in a boost to the Scottish tourism industry.

Anyone travelling to the Scottish islands should take a Covid test before they set off to prevent the virus spreading in island communities.

The Scottish Government recommends taking a lateral flow test three days before you travel and then on the day of departure if you are heading for the islands for a break.

Scots will also be allowed to travel to England and Wales from this date.

Travel around England and Wales is also allowed

Staycations in England have been allowed since April 12, allowing people to stay in self-contained holiday accommodation with their household or bubble.

The stay-at-home order was lifted at the end of March.

However overnight stays with friends and family in other households are still against the rules.

Meeting people indoors won’t be allowed until the next stage of the lockdown roadmap – May 17 at the earliest.

It is hoped that holiday accommodation such as hotels and BnBs can reopen then.

The Welsh Government is considering reopening other tourist accommodation after May 17.

But you can’t go on holiday to Northern Ireland yet

Overnight stays away from home in Northern Ireland are not allowed under the current rules.

From April 30, you can stay overnight in self-contained accommodation with your household or bubble.

Travel in and out of Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK and the Common Travel Area is not allowed except for essential reasons, such as work or attending a funeral.

What about going abroad?

Sorry, international travel is still banned in most circumstance, except for work, study and family emergencies such as to attend a funeral.

Boris Johnson has tasked officials with examining how foreign trips can resume safely when many popular holiday destinations still have high virus rates and lower vaccine rollouts than the UK.

International travel will not resume until May 17 at the earliest – step 3 of the PM’s lockdown roadmap.
