Hull might not be an obvious choice for a city break, but it should be.

The Yorkshire city is filled with funky nightlife, foodie hotspots and quirky shopping arcades.

Plus there are some pretty epic festivals taking place next summer you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for.

To show you around, we’ve asked local artist Rennard Milner to spill the beans on his favourite Hull hangouts.

Eat at: Thieving Harry’s

Head on down for the best brunch in town (Picture: Thieving Harry’s)

Even before Hull City of Culture 2017, Thieving Harry’s took pride of place on the corner of Humber Street and Hull Marina.

Since then the whole street has become the restaurant hot spot, from curry to oysters, tapas to pizza, all following Thieving Harry’s cool, informal example.

Drink on: Princes Avenue

The best kind of dive bar (Picture: Steve Purdon)

This whole street is lined with every kind of bar you can imagine, including the two best bars in town — Arthouse and Dive HU5.

For getting your glad rags on in a snazzy outside area with DJs, choose Arthouse, and for amazing cocktails and hot skater boys and girls in a perfectly gritty neon-lit cave, go for Dive HU5. Check out @arthousehull and @divehu5.

Shop at: Paragon Arcade

One of Hull’s beautiful Victorian arcades, this has been refurbished and houses a range of indie gems from hand-crafted homeware to vinyl to tattooists.

And get the best caffeine hit in town at Two Gingers Coffee, which uses Hull’s own quality coffee roasters, The Blending Room.

Gig at: The New Adelphi

The word legendary does not do this place justice… an end-of-terrace Victorian house that got a booze licence in the 1920s, it became a venue for bands such as The Housemartins, Pulp, Blur and Oasis… and the New Adelphi is still buzzing with Hull bands such as BDRMM, Newmeds and Low Hummer!

Don’t miss: Humber Street Sesh and Freedom Festival

Sesh Festival will return next year (Picture: Alamy Stock Photo)

The Sesh is a weekend of madness taking over the whole of the Marina area with bands, DJs, food stalls and open-air bars general.

Cancelled this year due to Covid but definitely one for the diary. Freedom Festival is a yearly two-week summer festival that includes street performances, carnival parades and laser shows.

Nearest station: Hull station, within the Hull Paragon Interchange, is in the city centre
