Liverpool’s reduced Premier League pay-out will see champions earn huge total

Liverpool’s Premier League prize money is still set to be sky high despite a coronavirus cut.

The Reds should have earned £63million in what is known as “merit money” for winning the title.

But due to a reduction in revenue coming in from broadcasters during the pandemic, the final prize fund for this season is expected to be trimmed down.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will still win the biggest possible bonus, which will be snipped by 14% to £54million, with the money going down by about £2.7 million per place for teams below them in the league table, according to an article in The Times.

Only the performance-dependent payments to clubs will be affected, so the champions still stand to cash in on a total of £175million after lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time last week, decreasing to £94million for bottom club Norwich City.

The Reds lifted the trophy after beating Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday

The stakes are still extremely high for all clubs fighting for places up and down the Premier League table on Sunday afternoon, seeing as every million counts given the direct or indirect financial losses suffered by clubs or their owners since the lockdown.

This is especially true of the race for the top four, with up to £100million on the line for Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester City on the final day.

The three clubs are chasing the final two Champions League places on offer for English sides, which each offer a windfall in the region of between £85million and £100million, depending on how far they go on to progress in next season’s competition.

There would be an added blow for United if they lose out to Leicester, as they would suffer a 30% reduction in their sponsorship payment from Adidas.

The Red Devils’ £75million a season deal would drop to £52.5million if they fail to secure Champions League football for a second consecutive season.
